Lots of checks!!! UPDATE!!!!

Original post by allegracristina

I drove out to Tanger today in Riverhead and got all the shower gels and creams for my bridesmaids totes. Also bought FH's Wedding Band!!! WOOOHOO!! Zales, 40% off with a $50 coupon, all came to under $300 with lifetime warranty! Also got FMIL's wedding gifts at Lenox with coupon (gorgeous crystal fruit bowl and vase). AND bought my mom's wedding presents ($200 worth of gorgeous travel makeup/cosmetics cases and a beach purse from Kate Spade). My mom asked for the travel bags. YEAH!! Lots of checks. Next is the marriage license later today, and then meeting with the priest tonight to finalize our ceremony. Phew!

WE GOT OUR MARRIAGE LICENSE!!!! Thank goodness for the Town Hall in Oyster Bay!!! The only place open til 4:15 pm!!! Thank goodness I was freaking out!!

That's great you got it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What did you decide to do with your last name? Just curious... still trying to figure out if I should keep my maiden name at all.

I'm changing it....Which was a very very tough decision. I love my last name!! I feel like my name is perfect as is!!! And there has been some pressure on me from my mom about his last name. His last name is Ciampi. It's an Italian name, when pronounced correctly it's Chee-ahm-pee. FH's family pronounces it Campy. My mom is Argentinian of Italian descent and speaks Italian fluently (as well as her native Spanish, and English obviously). My mom is also a HUGE A.SSHOLE about most things, extremely opinionated, nasty, combative, instigatory...I could go on...Anyway, she would just pronounce his last name how SHE wanted to pronounce it, you know, the way it's supposed to be pronounced she would say. Now here I am, not trying to cause any trouble!!! Even though I know full well the name is pronounced wrong, and it pains me to mispronounce it, I'm sure as H.ELL not going to tell my new FIL how to pronounce his family's name and tell him FH and I are now pronouncing it this way!!!! NO WAY!! I don't have those balls, sorry!!! So this was a huge issue for months and months, what was I going to say to my mom, etc. etc. about how I was taking his name, and this is how they pronounce it. Finally it happened the week of our engagement party (which was this Feb believe it or not, long story). We were with my parents and I said to my mom I have to tell you something important. I need you to understand that Mike's family pronounces their name Campy. And that's the name I'm taking. You must stop saying it the other way and accept how the name is pronounced. She got the point. I haven't heard a CH-iampi out of her since then!! But it was a huge stressor!! Sorry for the long story!!! xoxox

I think you're making the right decision. I'm sure it's been seriously hard for you to go through all of that with your mom, but it sounds like it's all been resolved in good time!

I think a lot of times when people from other countries' ancestors came to America, they automatically tried to 'americanize' themselves and their names.

My mom's married last name is Jannace. My step-father was introduced to me as Pete Jannace, pronounced like jan (rhymes with can) ace. Now, 10 years after they first met, my mom is telling us that Pete pronounced their last name wrong and it's really pronounced like Janice (the girl's name).

Those Italians are silly sometimes.

I think I'm going to take FH's last name. It's just a matter of whether to put both on my marriage license. I have a few months to figure it out.
