Love the way wainscotting looks but i have a question....

Is it used to make a long or a small room look bigger or does it look smaller once its added? Is there an additional bonus to having this besides it looking good (Brings up the value of a home??)? Is it always white?

Any info would be greal!

wainscoting can be any color. The shape of the room will determine if it will make it look smaller, plus the material, and color of the walls and wainscoting. We put it in a very tiny and narrow bathroom, but since the room was so samll , it added more interrest to the room because it couldn't look any smaller.

It doesn't have to be beadboard if that is what you are asking.

It doesn't make a room look bigger, it brings your eye down to a more intimate or lower level. It looks great when you have more sitting in the room, or if you want to divide the walls to create 'zones' or datum lines withing the space.

The aplication of wainscotting within a room will add weight to the walls and create a feeling of height or distance between the ceiling and floor. In my experience light colored wainscotting does not make the room feel smaller or larger, but a dark color does indeed give the feeling of being closed in. If you are going to paint I would recommend pre cut birch sheets of I think 3 x 5. If you are going stain grade pine is cost effective and comes out beautiful if pre-treated. Let me know how it goes.
