Lucky to be alive....

Lucky to be alive....

Hi everyone. A week ago today, DH and I were on our way up to Maine for vacation. We got in a really bad car accident in Massachusetts on the way up there. I was driving, and I wish I could remember exactly what happened, but I don't. I don't remember the impact with the other car. All I remember is the car going into the woods, hitting a tree and flipping. We must have flipped about 3 times. The car landed right side up and the both of us managed to walk out of the car. All that happened was I needed 6 stitches in my ring finger. We had to go to the hospital by ambulance, and they ran a bunch of tests. They were worried that I didn't remember anything. But everything was ok. Thankfully! Everyone asked me if I would be scared to drive, but I drove a few days ago and I'm ok with it. But I keep reliving the accident in my head (what I remember) and I keep thinking about how lucky we are. Tonight is the first night since the accident that DH is working nights, so I hope I can sleep tonight. When I go to bed, it's in my head. Has anyone been through something like this? Does it leave your head?? Thanks for listening...

Right now I know we are so lucky to be alive. I still can't believe it.

Thank god you're okay!!!! I've only been in minor accidents, but even those are scary! Like any bad/scary memory, it will never completely leave your head. There still will be times in the future where you'll look back and think about how lucky you were, but eventually it won't consume your thoughts as much as it is right now. Give it time. Hope I helped a little!

Accidents are scarey! Glad to hear you are okay. Tonight in the rain, we hydroplained and almost crashed on Northern BLVD. Take it slow, don't rush! God Bless!

Thanks guys!! I am trying not to dwell on the past. It happened, it's over, and we're very lucky and I just have to get over it I guess!! I am going to attempt sleep now. Thanks again!

Re: Lucky to be alive....

Thank God you guys are ok!! What a relief!!

I was in a bad car accident 10 years ago...and it still remains in my mind...I think its mostly because I hit my mouth on the dashboard and broke/lost a lot of my teeth and have had to have a TON of work on them up till this day...I still have 'trauma' from it the doctors and dentist say...it will be forever that I have to go to the dentist every 3 months....I have had 8 root canals and need another 1...

but I know the feeling of being lucky to be alive...if it was not for my seatbelt, I would have been out thru the front windshield and intensely injured, if not, dead....

All because 1 a-hole blew a stop sign and hit us head on!! I too could not remember, but my brother who was driving, remembers very very clearly!

Thank god you're ok!

I've been in 2 accidents, none as severe as that one, but they have left me really injured. FOr a few months after the first one, I would close my eyes and got o sleep and see it happenneding and the sound of the crash/crunch really haunted me. I'm really cautious and nervous when i dirve in vertian situations to this dya, but I got over it. I'm not haunted by those visiosn anymore, but when I'm in a situation similar to those accidents, then get cautiou and nervous and I remeber. I think after you've been driving awhile, and with time it'll go to the back of your mind.

Re: Lucky to be alive....

I could have written this myself. On my way back from PA a few years ago, on a very icy night, a deer ran in front of my then-boyfriend's car. He swerved to prevent hitting it, and we hit ice and lost control. Our car flipped three times, the t-top shattered, and none of us were wearing seatbelts. (My two best friends were in the back seat.) The cd player was BLARING music while we were stuck upside down in a car that was so squished that our knees were pressing into our chins. I took one look over at my then-boyfriend, who was covered in blood, and I went into shock. He somehow weaseled his way out of the car, and carried us all out through the one window (on his side) that we could fit through. We had to run away from the car bc it was going up in flames. A truck driver had contacted 911 and stopped on the highway to help us. The blood that was on my boyfriend was just scratches on his nose (I think he broke it actually), and the rest of us went home ok (with the exception of scratches, stiff necks, and back probs...) We all know how lucky we were to be alive. It took me a while to get back in a car and I haven't been as confident in cars since. I vividly remember not being able to sleep and waking up in the middle of the night screaming. It traumatized me for a long time, but I'm over it now. Thank God you're ok! I sympathize with you!

Thank God you are OK. I cannot imagine how scary that was for you.

If sleeping because a problem or you are constantly reliving it in your head, please consider going to talk to someone. I had to do that after an extremelly disturbing event in my life because I kept reliving it in my head and it was so helpful to help me move passed it.

I second that. If you can get through it on your own, great. But if sleeping starts to be a problem have them give you something or it can snowball on you.

You sound like you are handling it very well - it sucks that you had to go through it, but you sound very strong.

Hope you slept well.

Thank goodness you are OK. I hope that you slept well, but if you are having trouble it never hurts to talk to somebody.

Re: Lucky to be alive....

I'm so happy you and DH are ok! I wasn't IN a car accident, but a couple of years ago, JT and I were driving through Connecticutt in the middle of the night, and we were the onyl car around. Out of nowhere, a car zoomed passed us on the right, cut right in front of us and slammed into a concrete pillar. The person did nto make it. We both had terrible times sleeping for weeks after that. We would picture it in our heads all of the time. I think it's normal for that to happen to some extent, but if it really lasts a long time, you may have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I had to be treated for PTSD when my neighbors house exploded in the middle of the night a few years ago. I was terrified of loud noises for months. HTH...and thank god you are ok!

Re: Lucky to be alive....

Thanks guys for all the support! Wow matron, what a scary story. It seems like way too many of us have been through scary accidents. Thankfully, we both had our seatbelts on. Who knows what could have happened if we didn't. I actually slept pretty well last night. I am used to DH working nights, but I thought I'd have a restless night because it was the 1st night since the accident I'd have to sleep alone. I read until I fell asleep, so maybe that helped. Thanks everyone for your kind words and support!
