Re: Macys E-Ring

My fiance bought my ring through a private jeweler that works in Manhattan. He visited the guy at his house on Long Island. The jeweler came highly recommended by his Brother-in-law.

i say get what you can afford and be an educated shopper no matter where you go- Macy's, Diamond District, etc... you'll be fine.

Macy's has some nice rings....and you get what you can afford...you don't have to go to the diamond district or get a rock if you can't.... I'm sure there will be a sale for Mem. Day!

good luck!

I used to be a buyer for MACY'S. I'd NEVER buy jewelry there.
When I went there to browse once - I spoke to a guy at the jewelry counter. He talked to me about the rings and the way the sales work. When I mentioned I used to work for the buying offices, he slipped me a card for a friend of his in the Diamond District and said, 'You're too smart to buy this stuff we have. Go to the Diamond District. Their rings are better than what we have and the prices are better.'

he was right!!
the one thing I would NEVER, EVER buy at MACY'S are diamond stud earrings. The quality of those is pretty bad. That's why they are so inexpensive. I'm sure you can get some good quality rings there but I don't see how you would get a good deal.

Gold is marked up tremendously. Even with a 50% and an additional 15% - they are making a killing!!!

Be careful. Even with a discount - you can get a better deal in the diamond district.

My ring appraised for almost 3 times what we paid. I can give you the name of the person we used (in the end - not the guy MACY'S sent us to). he was FABULOUS. Gave us a great deal and he works for a very large and reputable diamond store.

Don;t forget to heck the jewlers and ask about layaway...you just make monthly payments, and when its paid off, the Rin is yours! It susually 6-8 months...we did that with Gordons Jewelers for our Wedding bands, had no problems!!

ALso, Zales, Gordons, Kay Jewelers,, etc also have you apply for a card, an I think will give 15% off if you are approvied too...

So, there are more options...

Good LUCK!

Look around, I have heard some not so good things about Macys as well but I also heard not so good things about Whitehall Jewelers which is where we got my ring, I saw the same ring at another store for $2200 more...I couldnt believe when I saw the price difference...and they guarentee the ring if you bring it in for inspections....good luck!

I bought Jim's watch at Macy's with that 10% + 15% + 20% deal they once had. Saved a bundle! We nearly bought our wedding bands there but we weren't 100% happy.

I agree with some of the ladies here. Most jewerly stores will give you a card when you buy a ring. Jim got mine and got a card and it's interest free for the first year.

My wedding band is on layaway. I didnt want to finance it. Great part is, the store has my ring in the back on site. I can see it when ever I want so it won't be sold and it's basically interest free. I think they made a mistake because I don't see tax on it either.

I bought Jim's ring at the same store during their November Sale. Saved $900 off the ring and got a card myself. He's ring is only interest free for 6months but I'll take what I can get.

Add on top of that that we both got a $100 gift certificate to the store (which I bought my father's cufflinks for - free) it really has been a good experience.

That and getting my ring cleaned every time I got in for payments on my wedding band.

Also I think Zales has a trade-in program if you spend at least $500 on a ring... you can trade it in for another ring...

edited to say- no matter where you purchase it- just make sure you get what you pay for... i really don't care about how much more the ring is worth, etc, b/c it's not an investment to me- if I wanted an investment, we would've bought stock!

Exactly right!!! A jeweler told me the same thing!

My mom passed down her e-ring to me. My dad gave it to her 30 years ago. Now, they are both remarried.

anyway, it's an oval cut, 1.07 carat, G, sI1. My Dad paid about $2,000 for it in 1974. It appraised for $4,000 in 2004. The jeweler said that if my Dad had put that money in the stock market, or even in an interest bearing account, he'd have well over $15,000 by now!

exactly... plus jewelry ALWAYS appraises higher than it's worth... it won't really ever SELL for that amount- it's just the way the market is.

At the end of the day it's just a piece of jewelry. If people spent as much time & effort on their marriages as they did on their e-rings, maybe the divorce rate in this country wouldn't be 50%!
