Re: Magnolia Bakery?
Magnolia is not far from my office and we always get their cupcakes for everyone's birthday. The frosting is amazing, but I personally think that the cupcake itself is a little dry. But people always rave about them.

Same here - LOVE their frosting...but cupcakes are not that moist.

Had their cupcakes...they were good, but nothing out of the ordinary. They had too much frosting for my taste.

Re: Magnolia Bakery?
Personally, I think the Buttercup Bake Shop (midtown east, owned by a former Magnolia person) is better -- they taste similar, but the cupcakes aren't as crumbly. I enjoy turning my cupcake into a little sandwich by taking off the bottom and putting it on top (frosting in every bite!) and you just can't do that at Magnolia. I must admit, though, you can't beat Magnolia's location.
Also, if you want more interesting cupcakes, try Sugar Sweet Sunshine on the lower east side. They have delicious pistachio, the red velvet tastes like chocolate cherry, they have pumpkin spice and so many others. Mmm...
Gee, can you tell I like cupcakes!

They're good, but not worth the lines you have to wait on to get them.
Buttercup Bake Shop, Cupcake Cafe, and Billy's Bakery have great cupcakes, but w/o the wait time.

Sugar Sweet Sunshine isn't owned by Magnolia, but former employees of Magnolia.
