Maiden Name to Middle Name your experience how to

Hi,
I wanted to change my Maiden name to my middle name. I have read that a lot of girls have no problem doing this at SS office & others have had to go to court to file a name change. What is your experience? Also what do you put as your surname on the marriage license - your new surname or hyphenated? I want my name to be: First Middle Maiden Married

To change your middle name to your maiden name you have to go to court in NYS. I do not think it is possible to have 2 middle names.

You should put your married last name on the application.

I put as my new surname on my marriage license MAIDEN SPACE NEWNAME so it actually kinda looks like it's my second middle name since my name is now:

FIRST MIDDLE MAIDEN LAST with no hyphens. I had no trouble doing that and we got our marriage license in Brooklyn.

My passport has both last names on it, but all my credit cards say just DH's last name. That's how I wanted it. For legal reasons, I wanted to keep my maiden name as part of my name, but I didn't want the whole bother of going to court to change it to my second middle name. So it's just one of my last names instead. But as long as you're not trying to defraud anyone, you can use whatever name you want in NY, as long as you're consistent.

Thanks so much! I was wondering about doing that, but I didn't know if they let you do it without the hyphen. I'm planning to go to Queens for my marriage license because FH was born in Argentina & doesn't have his birth certificate which is no problem in NYC (but a problem on LI). Thanks so much again - I hope it works!!

I was not allowed to put both last names without the hyphen in the Bronx. It was kindly pointed out to me that it was NOT one of the four choices. I figured it was worth a try but all it did was force me to fill out a second form I figured it was worth a try!

The new name entered must consist of one of these four surname options:
Option 1: the surname of either spouse; or

Option 2: any former surname of either spouse; or

Option 3: a name combining into a single surname, all or a segment of, the premarriage surname, or any former surname, of each spouse; or

Option 4: a combination surname separated by a hyphen, provided that each part of such combination surname is the premarriage surname, or any former surname, of each of the spouses.

Yeah - I have read that before... well I guess I will try & if it doesn't work go with plan B. $210 is a lot to change your name though. I wonder how much of a pain it is going through the courts. It is not fair that they let some people do it & not others. I wonder if it depends on who you get?
