Mailboxes, Birdcages

Is anyone using these at your reception? If not, what are you doing to collect envelopes and what are you going to do with them for the balance of the night?

I am using a hat box cake the Claud2001 made me at my wedding.
But no matter what you use be very careful that it is not left alone or out of sight. There have been posts about cards being stolen out of the cages/boxes etc...

We had a birdcage set up on a small table behind our b&g table. When people handed us envelopes we just dropped them in the cage (I don't think anyone put them in their on their own).

We are using a 'real' mailbox. My FH's Grandfather had his own metal shop and made a metal mailbox for his house. When he passed away, my FH took it. My aunt is going to decorate it. We thought it would be nice to use it so that my FH would have a piece of his Grandfather at our wedding.

Since I think I may have been Martha Stewart in a past life I decided to make a 'cake' out of boxes. The top layer has a slit. The cards will fall to the bottom. It is really easy and cheap. Let me know if you want instructions!

thats a good question, May, I think some of them do. I want a Mailbox to have by my Sweetheart table, it MUST have a lock.

the pic Curly2003 posted is what I am using It is from Lillian Vernon, I was thinking of making one myself but then I figured it would probably cost more, hat boxes arent cheap.

My sister got it for her wedding, so she is just going to give me hers and I amend the sash with there names on it and put ours.

I went to Michaels and bought plain round boxes. (they are brown) 3 sizes. Each one smaller than the next. I cut the bottom off the smallest and middle size. I placed the small one on top of the middle one and traced around. Then cut a whole in the top of the middle one. As close to the circle you drew as possible but not right on it. Do the same with the middle box on top of the bottom. This allows the cards to fall to the bottm box. I painted them all white. Then glued the small box to the middle one and the middle to the bottom one. (you can glue the tops on the boxes for extra 'security' if you want. Then I glued flowers and ribbon on it to decorate it.
Sounds complicated but was actually easy.

JENHOS: can you post the info on making the cake. I want to do something similar to that. I think after this wedding I will become a martha stewart mini-me!
