My invitations need to go out ASAP. I added a belly band with an evergreen sprig and cranberries which makes the envelope bulge a little. On the USPS website it says that uneven packages are SUBJECT (what the hell does that mean? So if I'm nice, I don't have to pay?) to an additional .17 cent charge because it can't go through the machines. If I am hand cancelling them, then why am I still paying extra???? I'm doing the work! The invitation will cost $1.37 a piece...isn't that a bit ridiculous?!? Any advice or anyone that has dealt with this, I'd appreciate some clarification.
Thank you!

Re: Mailing question and rant
here's the snag....originally i was upset because i had no idea of hand cancelling and some(not all just some) of my beautiful wax seals(that i spent so much time on!) got a little damaged going through the machines. Then i heard later on, that some brides who HAD hand cancelled still had their invites go through the machine anyway. I know postage is a total bummer with cost, but I'd try to swing the extra charge if it means them absolutely coming out un-damaged.

The thing is, I don't think it ensures that the invitation won't be damaged! I'm only hand cancelling them because I know they are going to be difficult to put through a machine.

Hand cancelling doesn't ensure that your invites won't go through machines... it just means that it will go through one LESS machine.
The 'subject to additional charge' means that it will be determined on a case by case basis since some might be smushy and can go through and others cant be processed by the machines.
Honestly. either loose the bulky add ons, or just break down and pay the xtra postage

it also depends how much it bulges and how thick the envelope is. I had a bow on mine and also did a wax stamp. They have a cutout of the width the machine can handle. If your invite passes thru this it will go thru the machines and they shouldn't charge you the xtra .17 - - they did not charge me because the envelope was thin enough. HTH

You pay the extra b/c regardless of hand cancelling them they still go thru another machine-hand cancelling only saves your invite from 1 machine-mail goes thru 2

Yea if it bulges that much like a huge buckle, bead, drops etc I would pay the extra so it will not be damaged.
I would bring a sample to the post office - do not use a website for this. Ask them to check it with their grid (plastic sheet that they measure it and see its thickness) I am actually sending my father to do this to see postage for when I have to buy stamps in Dec.

yeah definitely just bring one to the post office and see what they say. thats the only way you'll be absolutely sure

Re: Mailing question and rant
if you don't put the extra postage, there is a high likelihood that you invites will all be returned to you with ruined envelopes (big ugly red rubber stamping all over them).
then you'll have to get new envelopes and address them all over again, an stuff them again, and pay the postage again (this time + $0.17).
save yourself the headache and hassle, and suuck it up and pay the $0.17 now.
