Does anyone know besides the Maitre'D, where does this large tip go to? Does it go to just the Maitre'D only? My BM and my DOC suggested at tip of $3-5 per person at the reception--in our case that is almost $1,000 (not to mention all the other tips for all other vendors) So does this $1000 go to ONE person who I do not know and will not meet until the wedding day?

Re: Maitre'D tip
depends on the hall, but most of the time they split it with your banquet manager, or divide it amongst the staff. but sometimes it goes right to them.

Re: Maitre'D tip
well i know my venue says that the tips are included in the 20% gratuity but i do have to tip the maitre d separate as well as the bridal attendant. I know this person who paid for his daughters wedding stated that he was required to pay $750 to the md and it went only to him. He was upset because the md did not provide top notch service but was required to tip this amount regardless.

Re: Maitre'D tip
I mean I could understand if the tip for maitre D went to partly the waiters and all but isn't that what the 20% gratuity is for?? I just don't get how we are expected to dish out $1000 to someone who I won't even be able to meet in advance to go over details of the wedding. oh well
if some went to the Banquet manager then that would be better b/c i've worked with him a lot!

Re: Maitre'D tip
the 20% is a service charge, its not a tip. the service charge is basically how they pay all the back of the house, office, BMs, dishwashers, payroll, etc. and that is how the waitstaff gets their hourly pay rate. its not an additional cash tip that they recieve at the end of the night.

thank you for the clarification. I had sworn on the contract it said gratuity +service charge... but i def understand that. I was a 'bus' girl at a diner once and our hourly rate actually came out of the tips the waitresses got...so unfair.
But does the maitre d tip go to any of the house staff??

Re: Maitre'D tip
sometimes the tip is split btw maitre'd, banquet manager and head chef....as a waiter in a catering hall i know for a fact that the CASH tip is not seen by the waiters.

Re: Maitre'D tip
Well to tell you honestly I worked at a catering hall ( VYC) to be exact for 2 years in the front of the house and in the kitchen and let me tell you when you tip the maitre'd they don't share the tip with the waitstaff or even your bridal attendant so if I were you I would take that $1000 and split it btw the maitre'd the bridal attendant and whomever else you think deserves it. Being at a wedding myself I would tip my waiter as a guest but at my wedding I'm gonna put enough money in an envelope to give the waitstaff at least $20 a piece and the maitre'd I'm def not doing $3-5 per person they don't do that much for that amount of money no offense to them bc they are there to make sure nothing big happens.

Re: Maitre'D tip
as someone who has been in the wedding business for 6 years, and worked at several diff locations, its really annoying to see that most of the halls now are requiring an additional gratuity be put in the contract. because most of the time the MDs sit back and relax and just wait for the money to come in, while bossing the other staff around.
I was very annoyed when i went to one hall and they said that it is a mandatory $3-5 pp tip for the MD. I told them I tip well, i know the biz and i dont want to be required to pay an additional fee for a service that should be provided no questions asked.
they said that some people have stiffed the MD, and i said' well did they do their job right?? a tip is a tip, and heres a tip.... if you want me to book you as my RH DONT tell me how much I need to give as a gratuity

oh i was very blundt! I was not about to be forced to pay someone a gratuity if i wasnt sure if they did a good job.
Im the first one to say just give her 20% she was working hard (even if she effed up the order) but i am also the first one to say i love my money to part with it, and if you rest on the fact that you are guarenteed $ you know that most of the time you will not work as hard!
trust me i want to pay these people, but if you mess my day up no way i will pay you anything.
perfect exampl: I was a BM/MD for a wedding. the groom emailed me the floorplan the final two days before the wedding. come time to walk into the reception, the bride starts flipping out because the seating is ALL WRONG!!! we had to move the tables around all over the place, it was a mess. even though the groom emailed me the WRONG floorplan, she still blamed me, and in my contract it stated that they were to pay to the MD a grautity of $1500. (large wedding) needless to say they were not to happy to part w their money, and if i didnt have it in a contract, and didnt have bosses to answer to I wouldnt have taken the whole amount.
you just dont want to be locked into something when youare already paying a huge amount of $$$ for an additional service that should be included to begin with.
