major conflict: When should I register for gifts??
My fiance and I are throwing an engagement party for ourselves this October. I also know that my FMIL is throwing me a shower next April. Do I have to register for gifts for the engagement party or can I wait to register for gifts for the bridal shower?
Please help me ladies... When I told my dad that I wasn't going to register until my shower because I just want people to give me money he went on and on about how wrong that is. Is that really wrong? I always assumed you give a check for an engagement party and purchase a gift for a shower? Am I wrong or isn't that how they do it these days? Another family member of mine ( I wanted a female opinion) agreed with my dad and said I should register unless I don't mind receiving gifts I don't need or want. Is this true that people expect to bring purchased gifts to an engagement party even if my FH and I don't want gifts?
Help....I'm so confused.

Re: major conflict: When should I register for gifts??
I assumed people give checks for E-Parties as well because I always do that, but so many people were asking us where we were registered when they heard we were going to have an E-Party we felt we had to and I was OK with that. I'd rather take the time to register early so people give us things we want instead of 25 picture frames, etc....We registered 2 months ago our E-Party is this month and a about 8-10 things are off our registries and 70 people are coming to our E-Party..I think the majority will give $$$ and we'll have some others that will give things of the registry and I'm fine with anything! I would suggest register...check out the 2012 board we're discussing it over there too...

If you want registry items at your eparty then register now... if you want cash, then dont...

For the engagement party, a lot of people were asking for the registry and that's why we did it. Otherwise, our parents said money. However... friends gave us gift certificates, money, things not on our registry, things on our registry, and just cute stuff. It doesn't really matter if you want money because people seem to enjoy giving gifts, especially those who have known you for a little bit. I would definitely register asap.

I would register before your e-party. With everyone being on such a tigt budget, some people are not able to give as much $$ as they would like to give, so by registering, they are able to still get you something nice that you want.

I'd register for a few things, because you'll end up with some cash and a thousand toasting flutes and frames. Doesn't mean you need to go the whole nine yards, reserve that for the wedding, but get some good items on there so people have choices.

I would say not to register now if you want $$ OR start a registry but only little things for now. Do not registry for your china or anything like that, that can become discontinued over time. This happened to us. We got engaged in January 2009, registered in April 2009, engagement party in June 2009, shower was June 2010 and wedding was September 2010. By March 2010 I was panicing because I saw my china, stemware, and glasses were all discontinued!
I would say register for bathroom room and kitchen applicances and little things if you are even going to register at all. If not, and people ask why you aren't registered, just tell them you are scared things will get discontinued.

OMG these are all wonderful suggestions. I feel pressured to have to register but you girls are right about not registering for any china or stemware. I'm only going to register for a few items and that is only for people to inquire about purchasing a store bought item. I would seriously hate having a bunch of the same things or even worse having my items discontinued before the shower.
Thanks girls!!!!! I knew I could count on you.
All agree though that I should not advertise where I am registered? Only if people ask me I should verbally tell them?

we registered for our e-party b/c a zillion ppl asked and it just made things easier! we didnt go full out, we just registered for a decent number of things to give some options (for things that stored easily) and will add to it later for our shower :)

Re: major conflict: When should I register for gifts??
I am not registering before my e-party. I don't really care about gifts, its a backyard party....I'm really just having it just to have a party.
Some people are giving me issues about it but I don't care. If they know me and want to give me a gift, they should know me well enough to think of something. If not, they can get a gift card. I don't have many things I really want at this time, being that I have all of my mothers china which is sentimental. So i'd rather just wait it out. If people want to give me $, even better but its not really important.
It's really up to you but I'm totally about coming up with a reason you are comfortable telling people and HOLDING YOUR GROUND. I don't like people telling me what I should be doing

I'd say just register for a few things.
Fh and I wanted money so we didn't register. While we did get a lot of money some people wound up just picking things for us. I would have rather picked some of the stuff myself. Although it was all beautiful - I probably would have picked osmething different.
When people want to buy a gift they will. Don't make a full registry. Maybe just some nice glasses or china. I got champagne glasses, wine glasses, martini glasses. Toasting flutes, cake cutter etc.

Re: major conflict: When should I register for gifts??
LoL I guess that's why most people marry before they buy a house together.. My fh and I spent soo much money buying glassware and other home essentials.. lol it's going to be soo tough finding things to register for... but knowing me once I get to the store all my fuss will be out the window b/c I will end up finding a million things that I want (not necessarily need, haha).
