OMG how annoying!!!
Speaking of cell phones (actually, this is a little off topic - sorry) have you seen those Sprint commercials that talk about 'overages'? Is this a real word or one conjured up by the wireless companies?
DH and I were talking about this last night, but we don't own a dictionary so we couldn't confirm either way.

The saddest thing about that is the fact that I didn't know there was a such thing as an online dictionary...
Thanks for the enlightenment!

Hopefully my sheer ignorance distracted you for a bit and your co-worker has chosen a ring tone by now...

Yeah, but bling and Homer Simpson's Doh have also been added to the Oxford dictionary.
Maybe it is a new addition.

Re: Make it stop
I hate when people choose a ring tone when they are on the LIRR. I was on a train once when someone did that and someone else 4 seats back shouted out 'enough already!' and the person finally stopped.

Re: Make it stop
okay- I don't get my knowledge from Webster. I get it from REM . As in .. .Daysleeper
Receiving dept., 3 a.m.
Staff cuts have socked up the overage
Directives are posted.
No callbacks, complaints.
Everywhere is calm.
Hong Kong is present
Taipei awakes
All talk of circadian rhythm
I see today with a newsprint fray
My night is colored headache grey
Daysleeper. . ..
I won't bore you with the rest
It is a real word-- not sure if the cell phone usage is correct though...

Re: Make it stop
Yeah, I guess it's a real word (if REM uses it, it must be!), but it seems like the cell phone companies are using it completely differently. The standard definition appears to have something to do with surplus, but cell phone 'overages' result from the opposite of surplus, b/c you only get them when you don't have enough of something, i.e., 'anytime minutes'.
I'm all for fluidity in language and vocabulary, but 'overages' is just such an ugly, stupid word.
ETA: I have no idea why I'm so worked up about this today...
