because my boss's wife's co-worker came into work and was hysterically crying because her dog licked a rat's urine in her backyard, got a disease and the dog died after just 2 days.
I called my vet and Murphy got his shots last year, but need to be done every year.
They can pick up this disease from urine from racoons, mice, rats, oppossum and possible squirrels.
Never heard of that! Is it part of their normal immunization, or something separate that you have to ask for?
I think it is one of their regular vaccinations, I just never knew what it was for. My vet is in S. Bellmore and the vet there says she always does that shot because there are alot of raccoons in the area.

Re: Make sure your dogs have their Lepto shot
My vet suggested it last year for Max....unfortunately he was VERY allergic to the shot and we ended up at the emergency clinic. $500 later he was OK but no more leptospirosis vaccines for him! My vet said that last season he had 3 dogs die from it, so thats why I decided to get it for him.

Re: Make sure your dogs have their Lepto shot
My DH doesn't give out the lepto vaccine, he just said it's a 'sh*ty vaccine': anaphalactic reactions (shock, death).
Usually the lepto vaccine is not part of normal immunizations.
Unfortunately, Lepto is common here on Long Island. You need to catch it quick and treatment is possible.

Re: Make sure your dogs have their Lepto shot
I'm really sorry to hear about your bosses puppy. Is this one of the reasons they say not to take new puppies walking around until they have these shots. I don't know if it is but this makes sense. You know how dogs sniff to find the right spot. This is one of the things they like sniffing.

No it was my boss's wife's co-worker's dog, and it wasnt a puppy. It was an older dog, it just didnt have its shot I guess.

What are the symptoms we should look for?

Re: Make sure your dogs have their Lepto shot
I can't really remember all the symptoms, but I know lepto cause kidney and/or liver failure...so if you notice excessive drinking by your dog and/or lethargy, you should get him checked out.
I'm sure there are other symptoms, but I can't remember, I'll ask DH tonight.
