Making monograms

I thought I was fairly competent in Word and Publisher but apparently not. Anyone have any 'directions' on making a monogram in one of these applications? I really am about to go to a website and pay for one-----but I wanted to at least try to do it myself first. I am apparently stupid though.

BTW, before I realized that I am incompetent, I envisioned starting a side-business in making monograms and making tons of money. Clearly, that is not going to happen!
