Re: Male or Female?
I think it depends on the type of dog that you are getting, and also if there are other dogs in the house of the same sex.
DH & I always used to fight about this, as he has always had female dogs & I have always had male dogs. Currently we have a Male Pug & a Male Shib Inu, and although I have had a hosuehold with 2 male dogs together beforem these particular breeds probably should have not both been male. They are both very territorial and very possesive of us, and do fight quite a bit. It is calming down a little since the Shiba Inu got fixed, but in retrrospect I would not have gotten another male dog.
Also, in some breeds, a male dog may be more inclined to 'mark' his territory, even if there is no other dog present.
Good luck

Re: Male or Female?
From my experiences with Labradors, males tend to be more clingy and females tend to be more independent. If you want a dog that will never leave your side, a male Lab is a great choice.
Don't get me wrong, female Labs are total sweethearts and definitely have their 'I wanna cuddle' moments, but they are content laying in another room or roaming around in the yard without you for a while, whereas the males must be right next to you at all times.

Re: Male or Female?
I always had male dogs growing up, and then DH got a female Rottie when we were dating.....THEN we got a small male dog and I'm having nothing but issues with him-not sure if it's a male thing or a puppy thing, but Bailey is the greatest dog at 3 years old now!

Re: Male or Female?
I would never get anything but a female.
I have always had female dogs, who were very loving, protective and easy to train dogs!

Re: Male or Female?
at my parents house growing up I had 2 males and 1 female, my female is the dominant dog and the males always fight with eachother. At DH house growin up, he has only had females and they all get a long. We now have one female and are looking to get another dog. I want male he wants female so we shall see who wins this battle.
