North Square, which is across from the northwest corner of Washington Square Park, is very good. (Food is what they call 'New American' I think- I had steak and it was very good)

Villa Berulia in Murray Hill (Northern Italian- DH and I had our first date here.)

Virgils in Time Square ('soul' food- very yummy)

Langan's- I think it's on 47th or 48th- it's our favorite pre-theater place.

Candela on E. 16th, though this is more of a couple-y place

Mary Ann's in the East Village.

Most of these have web sites. There is also menupages.com, which has menus from many restaurants with reviews. You can also do zagat.com online for like $2.95 a month.

If you like Spanish food..

Try Victor's Cafe in midtown, great cuban food and great drinks too, a bit pricey.

If you like BBQ, Dallas BBQ on West 72st (the original and best in my opinion) Great drinks, great food, budget friendly, try to get a table on the upper level it's more comfy there

Rosa Mexicano by Lincoln Center (very good pomegranate margaritas!)

Mix on W.58th Street. French fusion. Slightly pretentious--the food is amazing but comes in VERY small portions. You leave feeling satisfied but not necessarily full.

Mesa Grill on 5th Ave between 15th and 16th. Good Southwestern food. The margaritas are good but not as good as you'd expect.

Dip Cafe on 3rd Ave. Fun place with great fondue. It's always crowded.

Ruby Foo's Times Square. It's Asian fusion and the food is always good. It's kind of touristy but I really like it. The drinks are great too.

One of my favorites is Blue Water Grill...the Jazz Room is a lot of fun. Fiamma Osteria is really good too. We also went to Butter recently, the food is okay, the decor is cool-it's like a ski lodge.

Monte's in greenwich Village. Excellent Italian food and a fun neighborhood to walk around in before or after dinner.
