Re: Know anything about getting a marriage annulment from the Catholic Church?
My girlfriend did this a few years ago and it wasn't so easy. Her husband had left her and she went through hell trying to get her marriage annuled. It was very costly between lawyers and the church. She had to be interviewed by the bishop in Rockville Center and she said she felt like total crap by the way they asked her things. They kept insisteing that she find her husband and try to work it out. That was not an option. She did finally get it, but it was a long, drawn out process.
Hope that helps you a little.

my fh just went through this. according to the diocese it can take up to 18 months. there are only certain grounds on which an annulment will be granted. an application has been filed. and witness statement given by those who know the couple. You are assigned a pastor as your council. you have to testify at something like a hearing. then you wait to see if they grant it. you have to sign releases to get info from any counselors you may have seen during the marriage. Fh got it down by keeping on top of it within one year. And this only b/c the ex did not put in any papers and was not contesting it. I found a website in the beginning that lays out the grounds. If I can find it i will post it. good luck. I would call the arch diocese of the church where the original marriage took place to get the ball rolling and get info from them.

My sister did it..and I know that each diocese is different. My sister had hers doen in jersey, once you have yoru divorce..go see a priest at the church you belong to, or Fiance belongs too. You will fill out paperwork, then you will be asked to have statements from people who were witnesses to your first marriage, for example..I had to write what I thought of my sisters first marriage and why I knew it wouldnt work, etc. My mom also did the same. Then after several months, we had to meet with a nun who interviewed us. Then it was annulled. I think the whole process took almost a year. But again, this was done in jersey about 5 years ago. Things may have changed. There is also a fee. Her priest gave her a form to fill out saying she couldnt afford that fee..so I think they only charged her 400. I hope this is helpful!!!

oh it is costly. and it is emotionally tasking for the person going through it. but if you want to be married in the catholic church you get through it.

my aunt is very involved in the catholic church and when i asked (for my fi) she said it can be done, but it costs a min of 2000. Plus, if there are children, they are no longer recognized by the church because the marriage 'never existed' Needless to say, he didn't do it and we now belong to an episcopal church!

Thanks so much for everyone's replys. Right now, we are getting married at our reception site, but we've been thinking that we would rather do it in church.
My FH was married before. It looks like between the aggravation and costs, he won't be able to do it.

Most churches will marry you for a 'recommended donation'.
My brother went through that annullment thing. I was very aggreivated. He married his wife and a beautiful boy (my nephew). But the church refused to baptize him.
My not-to-bright SIL called me up in New York and says, and I quote 'Your bother's married to his ex wife makes my son unholy in the eyes of god, can you help by completing this form?' Now, I know her so I always pause before replying.. usually this time I said 'Are you telling me that my brother isn't good enough for your church and my nephew, your son, is tainted because of my brother's past?' She actually said yes.
Very nerve raking. I filled out that form though because, as always, I am there for my brother no matter what. Since then though I always feel pity for those who have to go through an annullment. ICKY-POO
(PS that church baptized my nephew anyway, before any paperwork came through. When I visited them last year I called the bishop a hypocrite. Brother actually laughed, SIL did not)

My father (A Jew) and my stepmother (A Hispanic Catholic) were married by the Presbytarian Church in Setauket. The church was built in the 1800's and the priest was very nice....the RC church wanted a full annulment from Rome for her and it takes about 2 years to get it.....

The Catholic church will do most anything for a fee, ahem, 'donation'. My dad was able to annul his 19+ year marriage to my mother - for a 'donation'...and then later marry my step mom in a RC church - for a 'donation'. It was time consuming and I believe he had to write this lengthy letter and such.
The whole thing chaps my a s s - how the church could annul a 19+ year marriage that produced 2 children, is beyond me.
I don't know of any 'good' churches to recommend...I know that a Unitarian church would marry you without much, if any, questions.

Mandy..I am Catholic, my fiance is not..we are getting married by a Reverend who does christian ceremonies as well as civil. I asked a catholic priest about it and he said as long as it is done by a minister then the marriage can be blessed by a catholic priest. Could you do something like that? Have a Chrsitian ceremony and then have it blessed later on?

Try the Faith Lutheran Church in Syosset, NY. Talk with Pastor Anderson. He's really nice. I'm RC and getting married at the reception hall. Paster Anderson is performing the ceremony. They are very open over there.

Try this place: http://www.catholicanswer.org/
It is an organization of catholic preists that do their sacraments for an actual charity (children's hospital). We're using them, and we also know a friend-of-a-friend who used them too and was very happy.
I think they do annulments also.
Good Luck!!!

Look into an Episcopal Church or Lutheran church. Lots of ex-catholics join those churches. The services are very similar to catholic mass, so you'll probably feel v. comfortable.
for what it's worth, i'm protestant (Lutheran) and once-upon-a-time made the mistake of marrying the wrong person (lasted about 2 seconds, which is another whole story).
Despite this---I am getting married in March in a Catholic Church!!!
Here's how: previous wedding-- 'that person' was Catholic but the service was performed in Lutheran church. He never got permission to marry outside the catholic church or had it blest (as others were recommending you do). So then terrible things happened...divorce...betrayal...blah blah blah.
Fast forward to 4 yrs ago I meet man of my dreams, my FH. Important to him that we get married in Catholic church. I went thru process of getting a 'defect of form' from catholic church which makes the first wedding null & void. It cost about $25 and I got it from NJ diocese via local Catholic parish. The whole process took about 2 months, involved meeting with priest, filling out forms, etc. THe only downside was that I had to get 'that person' to send copy of his baptismal certificate proving he was catholic (he did when I called his mother. typical). Other than that, it was easy.
Maybe this helps?

Re: marriage annulment -Catholic Church? UPDATED Now I need a church other than roman catholic that will marry us!
the idea is.. almost ANY church will marry you for money. (sorry if that sounds brutal)
I am that horrible nearly criminal thing ... a person who believes in christ.. doesn't go to church, finds religion a waste of time and money.. BUT despite it all and my honesty in saying this to a priest/other clergy men.. for money they'll marry me.
Odd, eh?
So find a really pretty church or something you like, walk in and say 'I'd like to get married here, how can I have that happen...'
NO offense to anyone.. I know most of you here are wonderful people and my belief is all are blessed to try to do good and live an honest and charitable life.

:) Although we are at the beginning of doing the annulment I'm kind of aggravated with the process & also with the expectation of the FI to do it & he doesn't realize it is truly something deep that you have to look within yourself to answer the Q's & such...I don't know, just frustrated.
I'm leaning more & more towards going to a Lutheran/Protestant church.
Also please excuse my ignorance, but what exactly is considered an Episcopalion(? spelling) Church?

I am not sure, but you can try the Historic Chapel on Rt. 25 in Woodbury.
If you need your own officiant try Reverend Janine Burns.

I don't know where you live, there a group of monks or priests in St. James that do weddings, if you are interested FM me. There is also a really pretty and old Baptist church right in Babylon that could be an option. I know my friend got married there (his second) years ago, and it was a beautiful church.
