If you're getting it done in one of the 5 boroughs, all you each need is some sort of ID (driver license or passport), I would fill out the application online (it saves time), bring that + payment, and voila. You can do it up to 60 days before the wedding day.

We went to the one in Manhasset on Plandome road. we had to bring our photo id's and either birth certificate or baptismal certificate. I t was relatively quick and easy

Maybe I'm wrong but I thought I read you need to get it in the town you are getting married in. I could be wrong since for me it didn't matter. I'm getting married in the same town I live in.
