Hi all, I'm new to the site, but had a marriage license issue to throw out there. My fiance and I live in NC but will be getting married in NY. In which state do we apply for the license? And does this scenario present any other issues we should be aware of? Thanks in advance!

Re: Marriage License in which state?
just remember that you can't get the license more than 60 days before the wedding, and it also can't be done the day before either.
Me & my FH have the same kinda issue. He lives in Colorado (where I'll be moving with him after the wedding) but we're getting married here in New York. So the license we'll need to get here. What stinks is that it's actually CHEAPER in Co though. So just keep that in mind. When I called they said it's $40. You need 2 forms of identity (like your birth certificate & Drivers License). It also has really dumb hours. I believe it's only from 9am - 12pm monday thru friday. I dunno how they expect couples to be able to get down there together when most normal people work during those hours. Hmmm...
Anyhoo - just thought I'd share. Hope this helps a little.

you have to get it in the state you're getting married in... you must wait 24 hrs after you get it to get married, but must marry within 60 days or it becomes invalid

Awesome, thanks ladies! That's what i'd heard but i wanted to be sure since the fiance thought otherwise...i love it when i get to be right =)
Yeah, you're right though RockysGirl, those hours do suck. Oddly enough, it's actually more expensive for the license down here but you have normal business hours to go get it...never any method to the madness i guess. Luckily we'll be home most of that week before the wedding anyway so we can just get it then. Thanks again, happy planning!

Re: Marriage License in which state?
Actually our priest told us a story that he showed up to a rehearsal and the bride and groom presented him with a NJ marriage license and he was unable to legally marry them the following day as a result. He performed the ceremony but it was not legal - they had to come back after their honeymoon and do the whole thing over again.
Long story short - getting married in NY = you MUST have a NY marriage license!
