What is the time frame to get a marriage license, and what do you need to bring with you, and do you need an appointment?
Also how do I go about obtaining a birth certificate? FH doesn't have one, and his family is unsure of what hospital he was born in!!!!
Thanks so much ladies!!!!

I'm ALMOST 100% certain that you need a social security card. I think you can apply for another one. ETA The SS card is for the name change. As for the marriage certificate I think a driver's license + passport or birth certificate is needed.

Re: Marriage License Question/Birth certificate
you can go for your marriage license no more than 60 days before your wedding.
For his birth certificate, check out either site(Im not sure if he lives in NYC or LI)..

No you don't need it for either one. For the marriage license you have to bring 2 different types of ID, one of these ( an original Birth certificate, an original baptism certificate or naturalization papers) and one of these (License, Passport or greencard)
To change your name all documents you need is ur marriage license and probably a form of ID.

You would have to go to the social security office once you get your marriage license back after the wedding, it will have your new name on it and you can apply to change your name on your card.

I just got mine last tuesday .. and we are 30 days away... they are only valid for 60 days from the day you get it, so dont get it too early or it will expire. You dont need a birth certificate to get your license, you just need a passport or state ID/Drivers license

Re: Marriage License Question/Birth certificate
In terms of the birth certificate, he can also contact the hospital he was born in and find out which town/municipality his birth was registered with. For example, I was born in Plainview (it was called Central General at the time, but now it's aNSUH-LIJ Plainview Hospital). I had to write to the Town of Oyster Bay to obtain a copy of my birth certificate. It wasn't the actual birth certificate, either--it was a reprint and it shows the date I requested it on there (back in 2001 when we couldn't find it). I have had no problems using this birth certificate whenever I have needed it.
You DON'T need a Social Security card with you--I had to check since FH can't find his. As long as you have your birth certificate and know your SS number, you are okay!!!

Oh, somewhat unrelated, if you're booking ANYTHING for the HM under your maiden name, DO NOT CHANGE YOUR NAME UNTIL AFTER THE HM. FH did research on this the other night when we were booking hotel/car/flights. It's all in my maiden name. I'll have to find out where he found this out, but it was online somewhere.

100% correct. We are putting the airplane reservations in my maiden name as wel as the cruise ship. When I get to the hotel in rome (and the cruise ship) I might have them hyphenate my name. I WANT to be called Mrs Reiser But all my ID (passport) will be in my maiden name.
So I think I will ask them if its a problem to have me in the system as Frankel-Reiser. That way they KNOW we are married but I can still use my ID.
DO NOT mess with your plane tickets! Make sure they are in your maiden name!

Yes, I did everything under my maiden name. We are even planning a trip to the Bahamas a month after our HM and I did everything under my maiden name as well....I figure ill change everything when we get back from that trip, I don't want to mess with the whole name changing issues bc they can stop you from traveling if names dont match!!!
