When we filled out all the paperwork for the marriage license, I took his last name. Now I am having really bad doubts about it. I really want to hypenate it. Do I need to fill out another form to change that or do I just hyphenate it on everything else. I'm so confused

Re: Marriage License/Name Changing Question
I don't know for sure but I would think you would need to correct it first on the license because they seem to go with the name on the license when you change everything. The final marriage certificate is the proof they use for the name change.
ETA: I would call to be sure.

i think this is correct too....since they use the license to change your SS card and then you use your SS card to change most other things, i think changing the license is the first step.

Re: Marriage License/Name Changing Question
I think that you can do it at the social security office. I was there yesterday and decided that I wanted to make my maiden name my middle name. He said I could make it whatever I like just put it on the form...

Re: Marriage License/Name Changing Question
I felt the same way when I first switched over to my last name- it felt like I was giving up my identity & family heritage- gradually I calmed down & now I use my maiden name as my middle initial- that way it is still there- just wanted you to know you arent the only one

Re: Marriage License/Name Changing Question
(long sorry)
I feel the same way I'm in the middle of changing it and surprisingly a lot of my family is now just asking if i'm hypenating it DH and I talked about that and he had good points... it's still hard to get used to it. and places that are giving me a hard time with changing my last name when I call I want to say First name and DH last name when they ask for name but the name on the accounts that i'm trying to change is of course not that and they are like what? who are you... it's frustrating b/c they are asking your name and legally what you started to change it is your name you can't help that they are making you do so much to change it and aren't up with the rest of the goverment and everyone else with your last name. gr!
it's still hard to remember to sign the new last name i'm still in that transition so it's I guess okay with I sign the maiden name a little longer.
I do feel like i'm giving up my identity that i've had and grown into - you are not alone ! at all!
not only is family I guess having a hard time the bank asked me too if I was sure! I was thinking well what? you are going to leave one account with that name that doesn't match any of my Ids ok that's smart. So people now have me second guessing my middle inital is what my last name used to start with so I still have that attachment and for that reason I could NOT have moved my maiden last name to my middle name even if my mom threw that out at me, I figured my first and middle were my true given name with love and for love b/c I love my DH I chose to marry so I chose to take his name... so it's still my idenity of who and where I was and where I chose to go,

Re: Marriage License/Name Changing Question
My Name is Smith....and I was the last one to have/give up the name. My Father did not have any brothers & I Have none either.
Imagine how I feel to be the only smith...the last Smith & I am now married. I did give it up though.
