I'm not trying to come off corny, but does getting married make you feel like you are getting more in tune with your religion? I mean we are all so focused on planning & all of the small details, but this is a huge step, the rest of our lives. Sorry for getting a little deep. I just met with my priest for the first time & he got me thinking. It's kinda exciting. (I am usually not religous at all, just on the holidays)

Re: Marriage & Religion?
I definitely think it has done it for me, because I'm thinking about the ceremony, I'm thinking about what I want to teach my children, etc. I'm thinking about having a religious life with my FH...I think all of these things come out when you get married and moreso when you have kids

Re: Marriage & Religion?
I agree. I'm even incorporating those ideas into my vows and I haven't been to church except for a wedding in a long time! As a matter of fact, I am not even getting married in a church but I have great faith. I've just lost faith in organized religion (not God) but I have often thought about finding a nice church to send my kids for Sunday School. I was brought up in the church and I want my kids to be brought up with the same faith and values.

It's really weird, I never thought I would really think this way & now I am. I guess I'm finally growing up!

I am glad I am not the only one that feels this way. This is so much more than dresses, shoes, flowers... Not that those things are not exciting in their own way, It just really exciting to focus on the whole marriage and future that is going to be.

Absolutely! I've always been rather religious, but the FH hasn't been, and I've seen a complete 180 on him....it's also sparked the question of kids and baptisms...

A little bit. Between FOCUS and Pre Cana I can't help it. We spoke with the priest the other day and was really nice.

Re: Marriage & Religion?
Eventhough I teach at a Catholic school, go to church every week and holidays, go to missions and various religious functions and even am on the Parish Council at my church, my FH would only go to church with me on holidays.
I prayed and prayed that he would see how important it is to receive the sacraments and yet nothing in response. I knew it was not my place to force him. I knew that he needed to be ready.
After taking the Pre Cana class he has seen the 'Light.' My prayers have been answered and WE are both very happy about it! He's gone to confession (which he hasn't in about 15 years) and comes to 9:00 a.m mass with me every Sunday. We even talk about the mass afterwards in great depth. GOD has truly blessed us!

Re: Marriage & Religion?
Since FH and I are of different religions, we are having a non-religious ceremony. However, I have been thinking about celebrating the holidays - both Catholic and Jewish - and realize that if/when we have kids, that some sort of a decision needs to be made at that time as to whether they grow up Catholic, Jewish or both! I know we will continue to celebrate all the holidays, but the base religion, I have no idea.

Totally understandable. It is a deep commitment. In fact, it's a covenant. Don't apologize for being deep. The wedding lasts one day. The marriage lasts forever! (Hopefully.)

It's good to see that you all feel the same way. It truly is a special & sacred commitment.

Re: Marriage & Religion?
I totally agree with you. I have been focusing on the hall and having the 'perfect' reception, but the most important part of that day is the ceremony, where we become 'one' in God's eyes......

Re: Marriage & Religion?
There's agood book I'm reading on and off called 'the Conscious Bride' and it talks about all o the emotions and experiences a bride goes through from the proposal through the first year of marriage. Not the dress and the flowers and happy happy happy but the nitty gritty of the real emotions, good and bad. It talk a lot about the enormous change that brides undergo in this time period. I think it's a good book. it's so nice to have that actually recognized.
