Married girls

Just curious...how long did it take to get your marriage certificate? once you got it, how long did it take to change your name with social security? TIA

Our marriage certificate was sitting in my mailbox when we came home from our HM. I changed my name with SS the very next day. I tried the DMV but the line was too long so I gave up ha ha! Havent done that yet.

Thats good to know b/c my job requires that the name change be made w/in 30 days of the wedding...just wanted to make sure social security can do it that quickly. Thanks!!

Wait... how long was your HM that you got it right away?

Our wedding was 2 1/2 weeks ago (18 days according to my counter) and I still haven't gotten ours and I need it!!! My dad's friends are already complaining we haven't deposited the checks, and we can't until we have a joint account!

Ack. I thought it was about 3 weeks until you get it...

If you got your marriage license in the city it takes longer to get it. It took us almost 6 weeks. And then SS was 1 week to get the new card and DMV was a week to get the new license.

We went away for two weeks and when we came home it was here in the mail. I went to social security and dmv the same day and both places I waited about an hour. I got my new SS card in a week, still waiting for my new license.

You know you can open the joint account under your old name and then change it once you have changed it officially. We already did that and we're not even married yet.

The nice lady at the bank told me this yesterday too.

We're going today on DH's lunch break to bank of america here to open the account.

I still wish I had my marriage license so I could go and get my new NC driver's license and get going on the missnowmrs.com stuff, but I'll do it when it comes... they say patience is a virtue, right?

Thanks for the advice!

It's not worth it at this point, but for girls who are not yet married...you can open a joint account in your maiden name. Any checks made out to your married name just have to be double-endorsed until you can change the name on your bank account.

How can your job require when you change your name? Some girls don't change their name for years! I think the 30 days probably has to do with changing your benefits.

Social Security will give you a paper stating you have changed your name on the day you go. It takes a couple of weeks until you get the new card.. I gave my HR that paper that SS office gave me and it was fine.
You should be able to give them a copy of that paper .

Why can you open a join account without it? FH and I have a joint account at the bank and they said we can deposit if it says Mr. & Mrs. so and so as long as it matches one of our last names..

Re: Married girls

We went today and opened the joint account, but it has my maiden name on it since we still don't have our marriage license. If I had known it was going to be this much of a difference (6 weeks vs. 2 weeks) I would've gone on Long Island instead of to Brooklyn for the license! Oh well.

I may just go by Borough Hall in Brooklyn to get a copy of my marriage license when I get back to Brooklyn next week so I can get started on changing things, since the license is supposed to be sent to NC and I'll be back in NY for 2 weeks for my mom's surgery. This is kinda a pain. I'm sorta frozen as far as getting things done.

Re: Married girls

our bank took a copy of the signed marriage licence as proof and for my name change on the bank accounts
i would call and ask if they will accept that if you have it
