Married ladies - insurance

Married ladies - insurance

After FH and I get married, I will be going on his insurance (he doesn't pay into it and I do). Did you have to wait until you got your marriage certificate to change anything? Or can I do it immediately after we return from our HM?

I would have FH ask his HR department. I think every company may be different,,,but I would assume you need your Marriage License.

ditto. you'll probably have to fill out some forms and submit your actual marriage certificate when it comes in--but you could always get the process started when you come back from the HM. i submitted paperwork the very next day after our weddin! then later i faxed the certificate

can you start doing the paperwork before the wedding hahahaha. Well ill tell FH to ask what he'll need to do and get the paperwork early. I am also going on his, my co-payments changed a few months ago and went up SO much.

we confirmed w/ both of our HR depts, and they ended up doing things the same way. i changed over to his insurance, and we each had to submit copies of our marriage cert, not license, to our HR depts - to his so he could add me, to mine so i could drop mine. they made it retroactive to the date we got married.

I agree that you need to ask HR, but the policy also depends on the insurance company (though HR will know your IC's policy). It might be possible to get on before you are married. Some IC's allow this (assuming you live together) - I am already on my FH's insurance as a domestic partner and have been for many months.

i filled everything out before i left for my honeymoon ( DH came onto my insurance ) and then i was supposed to fax them my certificate when it came but i never did so i just handed them a copy on my first day back

I never had to show a marriage certificate. They never asked actually. I added DH to my policy & i filled out the papers before the wedding, they made it active as of our wedding date. When I came back, I did show them my new SS card for taxes. I guess that was proof enough.

Did you get money back for those few weeks? I would hope they would.

HR said i would, so hopefully it'll be in this week's paycheck! i've only had one other check since i cancelled, and that was like 2 days after i submitted the change in status.

I hope my company does the same!

Just check with his HR department and yours. Not every company has open enrollment so if his doesn't you may have to wait until it is time for their next enrollment period. That is what happended to my girlfriend.

Great question. I'm going onto FH's once we get married.

I'm going to have him check with his HR. I had him check if we could do it if we established domestic partnership, but they didn't.
