Married ladies... Name Change

What was the first thing you did? Go to Social Security? Then change your license, credit cards..etc?


I need to start doing this whole process!!!

Your name is not legally changed, until you change it at the Social security office.

I think you can go to the DMV, Social Security in any order, I think I went to the DMV first.

You can do credit cards the next day after you go to these places. They'll do that over the phone.

Although, you need a copy of your official Marriage liscense. Make copies!!

I went to Soc Security on Friday afternoon to start the process (fairly quick and painless). Take your passport or drivers lisence along with your marriage cert. You will receive your new card in about 1-2 weeks.

From there you can do all the rest...DMV, banks, HR dept, credit cards, ect.

I plan on doing HR and bank first. Then credit cards. After that I will get to DMV and my passport.

I started with Social Security and then DMV. Bring your original license, they'll make copies of it if they need a copy but they do want to see the original. Your bank is last because they'll want to see the new license and new ss card, not just the paper they give you saying its been changed.

Also, credit card companies will do it over the phone. You have to fax something for airline mileage clubs.

everyone told me get tons of copies of my marriage license.. i got 10.. i still have 10!
noone took it they just looked at it..
i say get 1... and keep the org. in a safe place

you can go to ss whenever you want...
but do it before tax season so ur refund isn't effected ... (thats what the guy told me when i was there)...

you can call or send messages to your credit cards via online account thing (i did it through my online contact option) got all my new cards within a week....

when i changed everything..
only people who will need to see the license it are banks , ssa, and dmv...

i did driver's license first....and then changed everything except my social security. that's the only thing left. (even though it is the most important) lol

i found that most CC companies didn't even need the marriage cert and i could do it over the phone!
