I have a question I was hoping you can help me. I got married by a judge on Friday. The judge took my marriage license and gave me copies of it. He said he has to send my original one to town hall and they will mail me a certificate. The judge signed the photocopies he gave me. I am afraid that this is not enough to bring with me to Social security. I found this on the website: All documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents. I have save this Info in my notebook but I did not see what I am looking for. What did you girls do? Sorry so long. TIA

You need the original marriage certificate (not he license) that is sent to you from the town hall after you are legally married. The certificate states that you are legally married in the state it is filed in, and usually has a document number on it.

I see now, he told me not to give anyone my original certificate just give them a copy. I will go and find out Thanks for your help

You need to show your original certificate to SS and at DMV. The banks also want to see the original. The only place wehre I had to give my original was to the passport agency, but I got that back in the mail. Worst thing that happens is that I order a new one from the Department of Vital Records.

you have to wait for the actual marriage CERTFICATE in that will come in the mail in a week or two
then take that original with you to SS & DMV and show it to them.....they won't take it--they just need to see it.

i was going to say the same thing.
once you get the marriage cert in the mail, you can get certified copies of it from the town hall you go the original from which will have a raised seal to show it is official.
