Mass Hysteria!

Mass Hysteria!

Ok...I'm not trying to be insensitive to the situation but seriously, the news and weather people are having a field day blowing this whole hurricane thing out of portion. Right now, its a category 2 storm, and the Carolinas will get the brunt of it...by the time it gets to NY it will probably drastically weaken. I think everyone is getting extremely worked up unnecessarily! I've lived in FL (but new yorker at heart always) for a handful of years now, we have alot of hurricanes... the best thing to do is to keep calm, go with the flow and just be smart about the whole thing. I can't believe all of the stuff I've been reading from Newsday about mass transit shutting down and whatnot. Out of control.

I hope everyone stays safe...and calm. Afterall, blizzards are soooo much worse and NY pulls through countless blizzards every year! I'm sure everyone will be laughing on Monday at how much hype for nothing the storm was.

vent over...getting off my soapbox...

i AGREEEEE with you.... people are psyching themselves up for nothing.... i mean its better to be safe than sorry but still people, its not the end of the world..

All i have to do is get gas, some food for the wknd (not much) and put my lawn furniture away (which needed to be done anyway.... AND GET BEER for the hurricane party im about to throw on sunday

Yup!

Food, batteries, water...and beer and wine

Have all that, so time for HH tonight! Did my weekend laundry today, too...just in case

Buuuuut, I will say. I lived in DC during both Snowmageddon and Snowpocolypse. The Februrary storm was terrible because we had a Saturday storm followed by a Wedensday storm. The stores got no deliveries the whole week. If there are floods and power outages, or another milder storm behind this....things might not get back to normal for a bit.

I totally agreee. I can't even go on facebook today cuz I'm soo sick of all the posts about the hurricane. Just stay in the damn house people! LOL
Ughh just one of those days!

i agree, but i think they're doing this (shutting down mta, etc.) b/c there has been WAY TOO MANY times that the city wasn't prepared and it was utter chaos.

Yup

We all know the subways are going to flood and trees are going to come down

What happens when there is a storm surge or the hospitals/nursing homes do lose power?

Their job is to keep as many people safe as possible. Even our apartment gilding had it posted today to get water, batteries etc becaus slowing power is a very real possibility right now

I too have lived in FL and I've been telling people that ALL day-
It's going to be fine.

If the media wasn't scaring people so very badly- people's weddings might not have been canceled.

It's terrible.

Yep exactly what happened with the Christmas blizzard...it ended up being no joke and the city seriously F-ed people...so they are just trying to cover their ***.

Plus most NY'ers have never experienced a hurricane so are doing what they can to be safe than sorry.

i agree!

i think they are going overboard

im so tired of hearing it!! peoples lives are on pause for like days now because of this its ridiculous!

i hope it changes paths and we get nothing!!!!!!!!

and then the news and mayor will feel like idiots!

I think people are being a little dramatic between the hurricane and the lil tremor. People are acting the end of the world is here and 2012 is coming true

I just got batteries water snacks and charged all my childrens ds's and my nook, so we can have some entertainment.

I understand why people cancelled it can be dangerous outside esp with all the wind. I wouldn't want to take a chance esp if someone got hurt on account that I didn't cancel my wedding.

i'm just hoping that it dies down by the time it hits NY. they're saying that if it stays inland down there, there's a good chance it won't be so bad

Re: Mass Hysteria!

I think theyre blowing it out of proportion only to an extent
This storm is going to hit at an astronomically high tide (due to the new moon)
Its expected to make landfall around long beach and its more powerful on the eastern bands
I live wayyyyy out east and theyre predicting up to a ten foot storm surge thats a lot of water! Most people i know are being evacuated due to being so close to the water
The 1938 hurricaine created the shinnecock inlet due to the storm surge
In gloria houses literally fell into the ocean and we lost power for 10 days this is hitting us at the same strenght

I think its better safe than sorry, if its not as bad as they say then we can all laugh monday

Now gotta go finish packing my bag since weve been mandituraly evacuated

Re: Mass Hysteria!

its funny though, as much as i hate it, if we DIDNT prepare for it, people would all be complaining about how UNprepared the city was... so its a lose/lose situation bc people will always complain... im just sick of the people w no common sense... batten down the hatches, stay inside, and dont park your car under a tree!

NOW on to the more important questions: what are you all going to be drinkning on sunday??

exactly..they are making up for the bs of that horrible snow storm we had where we werent prepared or plowed for days!

i am not to worried i think we will get tons of rain and since shes now a category 1 i think and i do hope she calms her pits...hoping for the best and not panicking at all

I've got 2 cases of beer in the fridge and a bottle of red.. what about u?

I agree I think they over amplify the severity. I don't think everyone has to worry about life or death but it is a major storm regarldess of the category so stay inside and be prepapred for a black out.

I think most people are stressing about the after effects. NYC is much more populated than FL and we have many more trains that can't be out during strong winds which is why there is no mass transit which is going to suck Monday.
