I have seen alot of listings in Mastic for new construction homes for little $$$. Is Mastic a bad area? I am just wondering why the home prices are so low compared to the rest of the island.

it's not the best nor the worst area! there are some really nice houses there---some new developments........and some not nice areas----very large school district.........close to the beach/water..........

There seems to be alot of new developments and really pretty brand new homes starting in the high 300s which is really rare to see!! Do you know what exit off the LIE it is? I might try to drive over there over the weekend to look around.

I've heard bad things about that area. I am sorry! There was a newsday article the other day and Mastic has a high concentration of drug use.

Definitely not a good school district. Mastic Beach is not a very nice area.

You girls rock! Thank you for the comments. I am totally unfamiliar with most of LI so its hard for me to know what is worth driving out to. I had found such a gorgeous home in central Islip, but when we drove out to the house to take a look the neighborhood was really bad, which was such a dissapointment!

mastic is better than C.islip ---IMO
you'll get more for your money out there too......i don't feel the SD is that bad-they actually have nice facilies---pretty new buildings, etc.--I think that you can get caught up w/the wrong crowd in any school...drugs are all over......the more money one has the more expensive the drugs you can buy........ it is exit 68 off the LIE--pretty far east!
it wouldn't be my first choice for a home but it wouldn't be my last either---i have seen the houses out there and they are really nice........i feel there are good and bad in all communities.......good luck w/your search.....

also wanted to add--talk to people (if u can) who live there---you can't believe everything you read in newsday either!.......there is no perfect town and some places get a bad rap through hear-say...... i am not saying that mastic is free of problems but, i think the same problems-(scales may vary) exist everywhere.....I know a lot of good people that are the products of mastic/shirley and the floyd school district and people who teach there too!

It's Middle Country School District. Not a bad place at all.

Re: Mastic? New Construction
I'm originally from the Mastic area - graduated from William Floyd SD - the area definetly gets a bad rap - especially from Newsday.
My parents still live there and some of my very best friends live there as well.
In my opinion the schools are brand new, and beautiful, my teachers were all very involved and caring.
I graduated William Floyd in 1999 and now I am a lawyer. - not bad for coming from an area with 'such horrible schools' - All of my friends graduating from wm. floyd are just as successful.
ps. - i've never tried a drug in my life (that's saying a lot more than most of my friends coming from 'wealthier areas' can say.)
haha
i hope this didn't come off rude...i'm just trying to give an opinion from the other side...
good luck house hunting!

I agree with you....I grew up in Brentwood and currently live in Central Islip. My friends and I are doing good for ourselves. Two went on to be doctors, one a nurse, and I'm currently doing my Masters. It all depends on how you raise your children too and the moral values you instill in them.

so did I!! I grew up right by the hs, on West Halley...quitest dead end 16 house street in the world. lived there my whole life until dh and I bought our house in Ridge. I have never done any drugs, never got in a fight, got into every single college I applied to, scored over 1400 on my sat's, and now teach. Its not the district, its the way you raise your kids
