Does anyone know how to begin shopping for a mattress? FI has a bad back, so I know that that must be taken into consideration when purchasing a mattress. Is firm good for a bad back, or is a softer mattress better? Please help! Thanks!

Re: Mattress Shopping
Firm is definitely better for that. You need something that will support his back.

Re: Mattress Shopping
FH has 2 herniated discs in his back and our mattress is FIRM. My back is just fine and sleeping on our firm mattress makes my back hurt. Maybe you should look into a tempru-pedic or a mattress filled with air chambers so you can both be comfortable.

Re: Mattress Shopping
My brother just got the Tempurpedic mattress and he raves about it! Edited to add I get certain name brand mattresses at cost and we're going to look into getting the Tempurpedic (not one of the discounted ones though) b/c I hear its that good!

wow, i was going to post the same exact question today! DH has a bad lower back, and the guy at the store said softer was better!! Is this posturpedic the best? He wants to get a good mattress and is willing to spend $ if it helps him.

Re: Mattress Shopping
try the macy's clearance center on glen cove rd - the clearance secion is toward the abck - we got a sterns and foster mattress there back when i got my apt for 200 bucks! (the whoel set!) i have seen it since in macy ads for like 1800.....its a little unfriendly in there but to save the money we just ****ed it up!!
I have scoliosis...and I always get firm...DH had to get used to it...but now he likes it...
I have had good experience buying from both sleepys and 1800Mattress (the store in Mineola)
with 1800Mattress...we were in the neighborhood...
but sleepys was great...I had gone to levitz for their sale...and they said it would be 3 months...I called sleepys and they beat the price...find a good low price...and then call sleepys..
you can go to any store to try out beds...just take the maker and model name

Re: Mattress Shopping
We were told that a slightly softer mattress is better if you are waking up with an achey back. We got a Stearns & Foster pillow topper mattress and I have found it helps a lot.
My parents have the Select Comfort mattress that allows each person to adjust their own side accordingly using air pressure and the LOVE it. Mom has Rhumatoid Arthritis (hurts everywhere) and she says it's the best mattress she's slept on in years.
