Re: Measuring gifts
that's just... wierd. I mean, I definitely notice the thought and effort that's been put into the gift (I'd be pretty pissed if my fiance just handed over a wad of cash or a gift certificate... that shows no effort at all), but to break it down like that, by income... And to expect a $400 gift! I don't think I've ever recieved a gift that expensive. I wouldn't want one. I'd be afraid to lose it. That's ridiculous.

Re: Measuring gifts
OMG you guys have to read this entry:
A couple of years ago, my unnie had this out-of-state suitor. For her birthday, the suitor flew in (stayed over at a hotel) to take her to a birthday dinner. He showed up at her door with long stemmed roses. They then proceeded to enjoy an evening of song and romance at the legendary Le Cirque , where he dropped $400 on a dinner for two. So far so good, right? At the end of the evening, he presented her with the gift: A Ferragamo grosgrain ribbon headband ($45 to $70 in retail value).
She recalls that her jaws dropped when she opened the gift box.
If he had asked for my advice, I would've recommend a pair of Tiffany or Mikimoto pearl studs, or, alternatively a Ferragamo handbag or wallet to go with the headband. Of course, unnie could've easily afforded whatever earrings and bags by herself. That is not the point. The gift was a test, as in 'I want you to drop some serious money on something tasteful, think of it as a symbol for the charmed lives we are to lead.' It was her testing the water to see whether to move forward with that relationship. When he failed to deliver, he got axed.

holy ****, are you serious? the man spends $400 on dinner ($400 for only 2 people? that's just ridiculous) and she dumps him because his gift was worth $45 to $70? First off, $45 to $70 is a pretty decent price for a gift. Second, how f-ing spoiled do you get?
