I think I have hypothyroid. I have a lot of the symptoms that often go unrecognized and my TSH has been creeping up and is now on the high side of the 'normal' range. For those of you who have this condition, how long before you started to feel the effects of the medication? I feel so lousy and I am at my heaviest now than ever in my life. I've always been able to keep weight off without much effort of a strict diet and exercise regimen. I just have no energy I waiting for my final blood tests to come back and I am meeting with the endocrinologist again next week. I just want to know what to expect if in fact, this is what I have.

Re: Medical ? @ Thyroid Disorders
Both my mother and sister have had thyroid problems... After treatment and medications it took about 6-8 weeks for them to really start feeling better. Good Luck to you!!

I have a thryoid condition and it has taken my Dr. 4 years to finally give me the right amount of medication in order to have my TSH numbers in the normal range.

Re: Medical ? @ Thyroid Disorders
Wow, this sounds like a very complicated condition. I did a little reading on it and I am amazed at how many people go undiagnosed b/c the symptoms are often attributed to other things, in my case all of my sypmotoms were associated with a fairly new diagonosis of pernicious anemia (b12 deficiency). Despite my levels of b12 going up, I still have the same symptoms. My main concerns are my energy and fertility, which i read can sometimes be affected. I'm sure once my energy gets back on track I will be able to exercise and maybe loose some of the weight I put on.
Thanks ladies.

I know what you are going through! I already last year went to my doctor and my bloodcount was high I had a sonogram done on my neck and found out my thyroid was underactive and it was enlarged. than i recently went for a scan and they still saw that my thyroid was enlarged and they saw normal activity. so now on Feb 17th I have to go to the endcrinologist at the stonybrook medical center. i hope they put me on the meds I am already at my heaviest weight i need to lose it.

Re: Medical ? @ Thyroid Disorders
I was diagnoisised April of 03 and to be honest I am still not at 100% My numbers are great but I am still exhausted and my metabolism is still the pace of slug!
Salason- weight is not the only symptom of this, it is definitely one of them. It is a tired feeling like you have never felt in your life, it can affect your fertility, your palms can yellow, you can experience hair loss, and many other things.

Re: Medical ? @ Thyroid Disorders
Well, I saw the endo yesterday and he doesnt see anything abnormal with my results. OK, so, my TSH went from slowly creeping up to a 4.4 (last test was in Oct. 2004) and now it seems to have dropped to 1.9 I still have the symptoms so he tells me to go on a 1200-1500 calorie diet to try and loose some weight and maybe I'll feel better. I am supposed to see him in 2 months to follow up and get more blood work done. He mentioned something about possible inflammatory thyroid disease. Who knows. 1200 calories!!!!

Re: Medical ? @ Thyroid Disorders
I know that hypohyroidism can also be stress induced- Hashimoto's. If that is the case it can appear and disappear when the stress is gone. In my case however it didn't. Do you think that has anything to do with it?

I didnt know that. Well, I am always under stress at work, home, etc... so, who knows. I think I will get it checked by my PMD before I get it checked again by the Endo. I want to compare the 2. I just wanna know what is considered high? I mean there are different ranges used by different labs, but I really think it depends on the individual.
