I am having blood drawn on Wednesday morning (because I finally got insurance and haven't had it taken in a while so ). I am FREAKING OUT!! The last time I had it done, I felt like I was going to faint/ vomit...I got cold and clammy and now I am freaking...can anyone recommend a way to prevent this? Thanks

Re: Medical question for ya...
YES definitly DO NOT watch!! I pass out with any kind of needle or anything because my blood pressure is ridiculously low, so I always have to make sure I'm well hydrated and eating enough before I get blood drawn or anything.

Re: Medical question for ya...
bring some juice and a snack for after. Your blood sugar drops after you give blood because you have less blood circulating through your body. Thats why when you donate blood they give you juice and a snack.

I ALWAYS get the same way! Def dont look, and LAY DOWN!!! I feel soooo much better when i lay down. If they normally do it in a chair, just tell them you faint and need to lay down, theyll bring you into a different room. I always chew gum when they are doing it and i tell them to talk to me to take my mind off it. Youll be fine! Good luck!!

I am so jealous you went last night!!! So funny, because I literally just changed it five minutes ago! I would LOVE to see them clinch against the Islanders at the coliseum!

I hate it too but I just don't watch and close my eyes and think happy thoughts about my wedding.

tell the person taking your blood that you get this way, and then they will let you lay down completely when taking the blood. Do not look! You need to keep laying down for about 10-15 minutes afterwards even if you feel fine because the drop in blood sugar comes out of no where. drink some juice and have a piece of candy(maybe they will give you a lollipop!) afterwards. i have the same exact problem realllly bad after my blood is taken. its ironic because i take blood from people all the time at work!

Re: Medical question for ya...
I sometimes get bad depends on how much they take out this is why i can't give blood or i should say scared to give blood. I do NOT look at all during the process. I focus on a part of the wall or a poster and think of something I have to do and start listing the steps of what i need to do.
When I had a ulcer I had tons of blood tests and would have to drink OJ or apple juice right after blood was drawn or even lie down. It stinks!

Don't be embarrassed to tell the nurse that you're afraid; they might take steps to make you feel better that they wouldn't take if you were an 'old pro' at it (explaining exactly what they are going to do, let you lie down, etc.).
If you have a really good nurse, you'll hardly feel it. Really. The last time I had blood drawn I actually COMPLIMENTED my nurse, it was so easy! If you do feel it... it's a pinch, and then some pressure for all of 20 seconds. It'll be over quickly.
Remember that it's a necessary evil and that you're doing it for the greater good. You'll be fine! It's the anticipation that's the worst part.

Clench your fist and look away. You won't even know they were doing it.
