medical question - need your help if you are doc or nurse!

I had an IV this past weekend for a minor medical thing, but right above the place where the needle thing went into my skin is now sort of bruised looking (not a giant black and blue, just sort of grayish/discolored). Is this normal when you get a IV?

Update - Thank you all for your responses! Now I am not freaked out anymore

I'm no medical professional, but I've had that when I had an IV also, I would keep an eye on it for another day or so and if it doesn't seem to be going away then go back you your doc. Feel better!

Yep, it can be normal for people depending on how long the IV was in for and also the types of medications that were infused through the IV. If your immune system is compromised, you are on blood thinners, steroids or have a blood disorder it may take your body longer than the average healthy person to absorb the blood from the bruised area.

perfect answer... couldn't have said it better myself...

plus it might have to do with how much the nurse or doctor had to 'fish around' to find a vein... i always bruise more when they take forever to find a vein !!

It is normal..I have tiny veins and even when I give blood my arm gets bruised unless they use a butterfly needle and I have a great nurse.

When I had my wisdome teeth taken out I had an IV and the bruise I had was huge!! I think they had trouble finding my vein but it looked terrible and lasted a few weeks. I think it's normal.

I'm also not a dr or nurse but I have gotten an IV before and this is completely normal. It will be back to normal in a few days.

I participated in a study a few years ago and the nurse was HORRIBLE at putting the IV in and it looked like I had needle track marks like a heroin addict. I wouldn't worry about it but if it doesn't fade, I would see a doctor.

It's normal, just as long as it doesn't get infected. Some people are just more sensitive than others...and it also depends on how they put the needle into your arm. Don't worry!
