Meet the Parents Help

Meet the Parents Help

So FH and I are introducing our parents tonight over dinner. You could not find two more different couples if you tried - total oil and water, with my parents being the stiff ones. I'm trying to arm myself with a list of 'safe' conversation topics and am failing miserably. Phone call last night from mom was 'We're not going to talk about this wedding at all over dinner, right?' There goes the one safe topic...or relatively safe.

Any ideas!???!??

We took our parents over to a Japanese restaurant. At first they were stiff, but then they relaxed after various food discussions.

Have you picked the place you're going to? If not, what about going some place where food is 'interesting'?

We're going to a Spanish restaurant in Pine Brook, NJ - equidistant between their two houses.

People can be different, yet get along very nicely. I am sure all of the parents are excited about the wedding and will discuss that. Plus they tend to tell 'When she/he was little' type stories.
Relax. They are adults and know how to met people. It will be fine.

We brought baby pictures as a backup. We ended up not needing them, but it was an idea just in case.

Well, we're breathing, so from that point I guess it was a success....there were quite a few awkward moments but my mom was so gracious - she carried a lot of the evening - totally unexpected. We'll see how the next goes (not for a looong while) but at least its sort of over.

All I can say is thank god for my dog - both sets of parents had 'Spencer' stories and ended up talking about him like a grandchild...'when spencer is at my house he does this....well when he is at my house he does this....' It was a little freaky.

FH is home sick today. He claims its allergies, but I think he lies....
