I'm thinking of meeting with florists next time I'm in NY which will be January. Is that too soon to meet with florists for a Sept 2007 wedding? Do I need to know what colors and flowers I want when I meet with the florists? Or is that something I can decide after I've booked someone?

Re: Meeting with florsits
I brought a ton of pictures with me, and explained what I liked about each picture - colors, flowers, design, look, etc. I had some colors in mind, and a vague idea of the look I wanted but my florist took that vague idea and went running. A good florist will understand the look you're going for and your vision and add their expertise and two cents and hopefully create just what you wanted.
So, I would have some ideas in mind. From what I understand, you can always change your mind in terms of flowers and colors, nothing is set in stone. Or atleast, that's the arrangement I have with my florist (just in case).

You might not want to book a florist that early... what if they have a bad rep during the mid-06 year? Might be too late to change once you book them.

Re: Meeting with florsits
When I booked the florist in November, 53 weeks in advance, I met with them and gave a deposit to reserve the date. They asked me what I wanted, how many bridesmaids, moms, grandmas, dads, grandpas, approx number of tables and if I wanted high or low centerpieces.
I have to go back 45 days or so before the wedding to finalize the details, so if you book when you are in town, you won't have to be too detailed already.
I'd also research on the site to get ideas of reputable florists from the past brides.

I booked with John from Flower Michele in November and my wedding in in may07 but i did have my colors, He's excellent he can help you with that type of flwers you need believe me I di dnot have a clue about names of flowers I left John knowing.
What is your favorite color maybe that can help with your color choice.

Re: Meeting with florsits
I booked with the Milleridge Florist in February, for a July wedding. If you aren't here much though, you should try to meet with florists while you are here (I was very happy with Milleridge btw).
It helps to have an idea of colors before you go, and if you can get swatches of the dresses to bring with you, even better. Otherwise, you can send them. If you have ideas about flowers you may want to use, the florist can probably give you a better estimate, though you can look through the books and start to think about it.
If you are trying to hold costs down, definitely consider seasonal flowers. I used roses, delphiniums, and hydrangea, which was pretty inexpensive in July.
