So tonihgt at the mall we decided to check out wedding bands for FH. We were planning to buy from Blue Nile because we like ordering from them, they offer an 18K Gold ring. Well tonight at Zales the guy tried to sell us a ring that was only 10K and said that was better and what most mens rings should be. I always thought that 18K was better. Help.
Thanks.

well, the higher the K's, the more expensive, but it also determines the 'softness' of the gold
therefore, some people do not like to get 14 or 18K because the gold is softer
so , especially for men, the ring can bend easily

14 I believe is the first kt that's pure gold, 10kt is mostly gold. it is still a quality ring, but it doesn't bend as easy as 14 or 18. pretty sure FH's ring is 14 though.

Re: mens wedding ring
personally, I wouldn't get anything higher than 14k gold for a ring. Technically, 18k is purer and 'better quality,' but it's too soft and I'd destroy it in about 3 seconds.
So, it really depends on your outlook - for practical reasons, I'd say that 14k or even 10k is a much better choice for a ring than 18k - unless you're the sort of person who never does anything with your hands, ever.

Re: mens wedding ring
24kt is pure gold. So to get the approximate percentages of gold in a ring you divide the kt by 24.
18kt is 75% gold and 25% other alloys 14kt is 58.5% gold and 41.5% other alloys 10kt is 41.7% gold and 58.3% other alloys
Gold is softer then the other alloys but more expensive.
The higher percentage of gold the softer the ring is. So most people go with 14kt because it's in the middle for durability, value, and look.
For a mens wedding band I personally would not choose 18kt gold because it's going to scratch and or dent more easily, not that 14kt and 10kt won't scratch or dent.

Personally, I don't care about the carats. But I do know that the higher the carat the more 'mushy' it is. My sister had an 18k band and it molded to her fingers within 1-2 years.
It's all about personal preference.

Personally, I would never go with anything lower than 14k. That is just my opinion though. I would go 14k, 18k or platinum. JMO. 10k is usually very cheap meaning that the gold is cut more and it is not as pure. 24k gold is the purest gold. HTH..
