Hi..just a quick question...has anyone had any issues with mermaid dresses...I have always wanted one but I hear that you have to be at least 5'6' with no heals to pull it off....I am just about 5'3' with no shoes... should I not even bother?

Re: mermaid dress
I know that is what everyone tells me but I hear that the alterations mess it up

You have to try everything, don't rule out a style because of what someone else says. You have to try it!!

I'm only 5'4' and I wore a mermaid dress to my prom. It looked great. I wasn't too small for it. I don't see why a wedding dress would be different.

Re: mermaid dress
you can always try it on if you want just to see...but when i went dress shopping and asked about a mermaid they told me NOOOOO, i am 5'2 and they said it will cut my legs in half. I was looking for a different style regardless but Fh likes it so thats why i even asked but didnt even try it on

It will make you look short unless you are willing to wear really high heels all night-the 'swwop' effect will be cut off by alterations unless they amke it from the factory to your exact measurements which is much more costly but it can be done that way. Otherwise I would nix it. I am 5'6 and it just barely looked good on me without heels and I have super long legs and no torso.

I'm 5'4' - the mermaid dress made me look TALLER. Try it on, it can't hurt!
Here's a pic. Tons more in my albums.
Honestly, she is a lot shorter in person. I thought she was 5'8' or more from her pics. But when I met her in person, I could fit her in my little pocket.
I say, try on the dress. You might just love it!

I am 5'4 and I tried on a mermaid dress that looked really good on me, but it was a little fancier than what I wanted...You should at least try one on...

Re: mermaid dress
i agree with the other ladies...try it on anyway, it may look great on you. it kinda depends on body type and the way the dress is cut.

Re: mermaid dress
I think the thing with mermaid dresses probably isn't just height though. They are fitted dresses, so they hug curves in a certain way. When you try on the mermaid dresses, see how they hug your curves n stuff and feel out the whole look. Good luck!
