My finance and I are having trouble choosing between Metropolitan and Crest Hollow. There's a significant price difference, so we're inclined to go with Metropolitan.
The first time we went to Metropolitan we loved it. We thought it fit our personalities; it is beautiful but not lavish or gaudy. We also loved the balcony, as well as the intimacy of it.
However, when we went back I was disappointed; I saw some gashes on the wood on the walls and stairs, a dirty kitchen door, a few paint stains on chairs, and worn carpeting. This lowered my opinion of Metropolitan -- by contrast we did not notice the same problems at Crest Hollow, which to be fair had been recently renovated.
Then, my fiance and his parents tasted the food at Metropolitan (I was out of town but trust their judgment), and they absolutely loved it. Crest Hollow was also good, though my fiance said it was not as good as Metropolitan. Neither he nor his parents thought the problems were that bad.
I wanted to know whether anyone else noticed these problems, and whether or not they should deter us from picking a place that we otherwise loved. If it is worth it, do you have any tips on downplaying the damage and/or deflecting comments by the inevitable judgmental relative?
Thanks!

Re: Metropolitan vs. Crest Hollow
I've been to weddings at both, and honestly, Metropolitan's food is absolutely AMAZING, especially compared to CHCC.
The only restriction is that the Metropolitan has limited space - I think no more than 150 guests right?
I had a VERY positive experience at the Metropolitan and was actually upset that I never even knew about it for my own wedding...b/c I would have loved to have it there.

I think that you are being more critical than most of your guests would be. They probably won't even notice anything! We visited the Metropolitan and really loved the look of it. When people leave, they're not likely to be talking about a gash in the wood or a stain on a chair. They'll be talking about what they ate and how it was. The food would be what would make the final decision for me.

Re: Metropolitan vs. Crest Hollow
HI! I'm a Metropolitan BRIDE TO BE (3 months) and am SO excited!! It has such character & class that IMO many other places just don't have!!! We've worked with Eileen so far and she has been just wonderful!!! Everyone we tell that our wedding is at The Met says 'OMG the food is amazing!!!' I think people will remember that and the whole look of The Met rather than a few scratches/ paint chips... etc. Also, we are probably going to have around 150 (not using the upstairs- might just have some informal tables for people to hang out if they wish) Please FM me with any other questions!!!
GOOD LUCK!

Re: Metropolitan vs. Crest Hollow
We looked at both and they were actually both in our top three....price was definitely a factor but we lovd CHCC grounds and wanted most of the event outside (ceremony and reception).. so we chose CHCC...The Metropolitant is great though...you just have to weigh your options (price, look that you are going for, food...) we had a tasting at CHCC and the food was amazing
Goodl uck!

Re: Metropolitan vs. Crest Hollow
I personally do not want to offend anyone but I had a terrible experience at CHCC at a wedding I went to this year. The food was not edible by any means. The cocktail hour was the worst. I had to fill up on liquor.
I'd go with Metropolitan. I have heard nothing but good things and it is very pretty- contemporary which is different from all the other halls here on the Island.
Just my two cents.

We checked out the metropolitan. The food was great. Fh loved the look of it, but I wanted somewhere with more of an outdoor space. I wouldn't worry about the things that you noticed no one else will look so closely. Good luck!

Re: Metropolitan vs. Crest Hollow
Thank you to those who posted to help. We decided to go with the Metropolitan because we felt it better fit our personality, the price is right, the food was outstanding (the best out of the 4 places we tried) and we decided the few issues we noticed were not that big a deal given the overall beauty of the place.

Re: Metropolitan vs. Crest Hollow
IMHO, I was worried about the way the chairs look and the carpet with the color of my bm's dresses at first. But I realized after being in a lot of weddings recently that I can't remember or don't think I even noticed what their rooms looked like. I remember the FOOD, ALCOHOL, THE MUSIC, BRIDE'S GOWN AND HOW HAPPY THE COUPLE WAS!! I would go for the place with the good food and forget about what the floor looks like. If people are drinking and dancing, they won't even notice the little wear and tear of the RH. HTH
ETA: I just read your last post and Congratulations! Happy Planning!

Re: Metropolitan vs. Crest Hollow
I actually like Metropolitan more than Crest Hollow. No real reason for it, just do.

Re: Metropolitan vs. Crest Hollow
The quote for us in September 2009 was $95/person with a 140 minimum. I actually have quotes from a number of places for September 2009.

Re: Metropolitan vs. Crest Hollow
i LOVED the metropolitan and really wanted to have my wedding there, but then we went with the thatched cottage in hopes to have the wedding outdoors. i thought the metropolitan was really beautiful and the people there seemed really friendly, and the pricing wasn't bad. go with what you really want though. i've heard the chcc is nice too but i've honestly never been there. i just loved the look of the metropolitan, the green and the upstairs cocktail hour, i really loved it.
