I am so nervous about the 'water' I have IBS and have stomach issues anyway. Is there anything I can do? I am not going to drink water but I am worried about ice and salad and stuff. My TA said she has had problems at other resorts but not this one. But then again she was trying to sell me a vacation.
What is everyones experience? My tummy hurts just thinking about it!

Re: Mexico 'water' question
I have the same stomach problems and I really only had a problem when I forgot about the ice and had 5 margaritas in one night at an outside bar. I never felt sick from any of the food or drink I had at the all-inclusive I stayed at.
Then again, my brother-in-law, who has no stomach problems at all was sick for five days

I have a very sensitive stomach and I had no problems in Mexico... but I guess as a precaution I would drink wine with your meals instead of something else with ice in it...

take pepto bismol tablets. One per day to coat your stomach. Should help keep the iky's at bay.

Re: Mexico 'water' question
We went to Mexico for our HM and had no problems. Throughout the all-inclusive resort we stayed at, we received bottled water when we wanted water. As far as soda we drank it with no ice just to be safe but we also had tons of mixed drinks and everything was fine as long as you dont leave the resort.

Yeah, I haven't been yet, but I've heard to stick to the bottled water, even while brushing your teeth and even if your resort has a purification system. No ice, and be careful of raw vegetables and fruit you cannot peel.
I keep thinking what will be left to eat?
Question for those who have gone--is brewed coffee safe? I would think so since it's hot, but it is made with water.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention we used bottled water to brush our teeth too just to be safe. As far as all the foods that are made with water like soup, coffee, salad is washed with water, etc. We were fine.

We just got back. I had no problems at all. We ate salads and drank bottled water. We stayed at a resort that says they purify the water.

Hot beverage doesnt necessarily make it OK to drink. A co-worker of mine had all bottled everything, but drank hot tea in the morning.....and caused him severe cramping on his way home. And then the Montezuma kicked in when he was home.
But if its all inclusive, I'm sure it will be fine. What exactly is this all caused by? Is it a bacteria? A Parasite? I assume the natives are not affected b/c their body has been immuned to it. Is this correct?

I went to Cancun a couple of years ago with FH and another couple---they all got sick!! I think either from snorkelling or eating at a 'fast food' place---I was fine--I think b/c I was taking anibiotics for a repiratory infection!!! Anyway---I would take anibiotics and maybe you'll be fine like I was!!!! Maybe talk too your doctor about it.

Re: Mexico 'water' question
I had the same worry about it. I have IBD and was very concerned. Well, I drank the bottled water which is purified through a reverse osmosis system. I only drink spring water here and I think my body just couldn't handle it. I was sick the whole week.
Having said that though, it could happen to people that have no gastro issues too. It would have been that my IBD just decided to act up that week. I should have stuck to Tequila!
