Re: Milk

You piqued my curiousity....I found this....

NYC restricts milk to 4 days, and you legally have to pull it off the shelves. Few other jurisdictions have such a restriction, so the manufacturer gets to put whatever date they feel is reasonable.

Milk is actually good for a lot longer than 4 days, and NYC's requirement is pretty strict. It stems from a time when refrigeration was less reliable, especially getting it all the way from a farm to inside a big city (and they used to restrict it to less than 3 days).

They loosened the requirements, but it's still stricter than the milk processors think is right. So they put on the real expiration date, as well as NYC's artificially short date.

Re: Milk

I actually researched it on google and a site stated the following

'New York City milk expires sooner because the difficulty of delivering milk in the city means that the average milk carton is unrefrigerated (sitting on the sidewalk or in a truck) for longer than the average milk carton outside the city, which is usually delivered directly to a loading dock in a supermarket. '

well theres the answer!

My theory ... I used to live in the city and had a few theories about this...

1. The trucks sometimes leave it on the curb for a while before loading it into the store.

2. Sometimes those bodegas has very old crap in their fridges for weeks after it's expired.

This is an answer I found on Yahoo...

It's because the NYC health department operates independent of the NY health department and it has stricter standards on dairy.
