We just bought a house in Mineola. There are a lot of ok areas in mineola. We were fortunate and got a house in this really, really nice, well kept part of mineola. All of the houses are tutors or brick colonials. Ours is a brick colonial. Mineola schools is adequate. It depends on where you are from. I am from Old Brookville and DH and I currently live in Manhasset, so Mineola is a move down for us. However, there are many areas that are worse. We needed a town with a good train line bc dh commutes. Also, the house was really great for us and we loved the street it was on. So it was a no brainer for us.

just curious, but why would you move from Manhasset...DH and I drove thru there recently and its sooo pretty....was it because of the train line? (you can tell me to buzz off if you want...but i was just curious)

We rent in Manhasset and pay $2500 for a two bedroom/one bathroom. There are a few houses that we could afford in Manhasset but they were basically dumps in comparison to the house we ended up buying. Anything really nice in Manhasset is a ton of moola. So we plan on staying in Mineola for 5 years and then move back.

oh then I misunderstood...I thought you owned a home in Manhasset... my mistake..

congratulations on being a homeowner!

Re: mineola schools/neighborhood

I grew up in Mineola and the schools don't have a great reputation....or aren't spoken about all that much in terms of the best schools on Long Island....but they are actually very very good.
They have tons of teachers, tons of differnt types of classes and tons of opportunities for all types of students.
And the teacher's pay scale is pretty high, so they get good teachers to work there.
As far as the housing....there are some great areas, and some not so great areas...but it's pretty easy to tell which is which. My parents are currently selling their house because they want to move to Suffolk to live closer to all of their friends....but i lived there with them for 28 years and I think it's a lovely place to live

I went to see several houses in Mineola, and was actually going to buy a house on Plymouth ave which is off of Roslyn Rd but the sellers lawyer wasn't making it easy for us. I really loved the house too, but my husband wasn't to crazy about the industerial area about 3 blocks from there.

My sister is a teacher at Mineola Middle School and she's very impressed with the school system. She's also worked in Brooklyn with some really bad kids, so she said coming to Mineola was like heaven compared to her last classroom!
