Is there anyone who doesn't like the idea of STDs and isn't planning on using them? I actually think they are a very good idea and love some of the cute ones I've seen on LIWs and elsewhere. However, I've had people say to me (not in regards to my wedding) that they don't like save the dates because they pressure guests to attend your wedding (in other words you have no excuse not to attend because you've known the date for a year). Does anyone here feel this way? We're getting married on the Sunday of Mem'l Day weekend and I think it would be dumb not to do them....but I can't decide for sure. Opinions please!!!! Thanks

We didn't do STD's - we just didn't have enough time. If I were you though I would do them, just because it is memorial day weekend, people usually make plans for that weekend pretty early. I don't think it pressures people - JMO. It'll also give you an idea of who is coming so you know how many to invite (depending on how many you guaranteed).

I have heard the same thing but we r sending them out for the same reason I think you should: its a holiday. A lot of people make plans for the holidays months before and I think the STD's just give them a heads up so they either don't make plans or rearrange them if they choose. It also helps those who have children who are not bringing them to the wedding to find a babysitter ahead of time especially because of the holiday. I don't see anything wrong with sending them and when I have received them have never felt pressured to attend, I think it is just courtesy.

I think they are a great idea if you are planning a wedding on a holiday weekend, and/or you have a lot of out of town guests. We plan on sending them out about a year in advance -- once we are sure about hotel rooms, etc. This way not only will my oot guests have time to see if they can make it, but also have a chance of reserving rooms on a holiday weekend. I don't think they are necessary, though.

I have never felt pressured by a STD and I find them very helpful to make plans and such for weddings that I need to travel to.

Do what YOU want, not what other people think. I think it is a good idea to do them since it is Memorial Day weekend.

Most people recommend to do STD's when you are getting married on a holiday weekend. I would do them for sure and not worry about people feelinmg pressured. No one has said that to me.....yet

Re: Mixed feelings about STDs. Would like opinions.
Our wedding is on Columbus day weekend, three day weekend we thought yes or no to send them. We decided on no for a couple reasons, I think they are tacky (just my opinion, please no one get upset)
What if you want to cut your guest list? You can't because you send pre-invites out(STD's) letting people know, when your wedding is.
We didn't have too many OOT guests I just think it is just another way to make brides spend more $$$$$$$$$$$$$
I absolutely without a doubt, believe if your wedding is on a major holiday weekend, Memorial day, New yrs, Christmas, etc. It is a nice gesture to let OOT guests know way ahead of time so they can make travel arrangements.
Please no one take offense, just my opinions I have seen some beautifully done STD's by girls on LIW!!!

Since you're getting married on a holiday weekend, I would suggest sending them out to the people who you are 100% sure you are inviting. I'm sure they'll appreciate the advance notice! (My FH are getting married on a Thurs. which requires advance notice too, so we sent STDs out with our Christmas cards.)

What difference does it make when you are getting married? I sent STD magnets and so many people called me to tell me they loved them. I never thought about the point you made, like some may see it as being somewhat obnoxious, that's just silly. Look at it this way: you are sending because you would be honored to have these people with you on your special day and want them to keep their schedule open so they can share it with you. It's not like you are sending STD's for your bridal shower

Orginally, I wasn't going to send them out, but since we moved our wedding date, to Mother's day, we have been re-thinking them.
Still not sure what to do...so I'm in the same boat...

I also think STDs are a little tacky. I just dont really see the point in them. We are already sending out the invites 2 months b4 the wedding.

I think that STDs are a courtesy that benefits your guests. I'm getting married at a time of year that many guests will be hard-pressed to get hotel reservations if they wait until they get their formal invitations to try. The STD enables them to make advance travel arrangements much more cheaply than otherwise.

Re: Mixed feelings about STDs. Would like opinions.
we got save the dates that were very simple small cards. we added a strip of magnets to the back and sent them out about a year in advance. everyone loved them. it is so nice when we go over peoples houses to see them up on the fridge or boards. we had quite a few people traveling so it was more for them, but we pretty much sent them to everyone.
i think you should defintely send it because it is a holiday weekend. if people want to be there they will be. i never feel pressured to have to go to a wedding.

Re: Mixed feelings about STDs. Would like opinions.
Thank you to everyone for your opinions. Glad to hear that some people have the same concerns. I think we probably will be doing them...but we may take some suggestions mentioned, like only sending to OOT guests or people who are most expected to come.
