OMG It better be a Wedding dress for that price!! That's a LOT! I would max out at about $600 for a MOB dress, but $1200?!? That's steep! She should pay for 1/2 of it at least!

Mom's dress was right around that number! but she's paying for it herself! Personally, I think that is way to expensive to expect you to pay for it! Have you tried Saks in Manhattan! They have a huge selection!
