OK so what is the proper etiquette for this? My mom gets her dress first and then that determines that style (very formal/formal/not so much) for FMIL right? What about the color?

MOG said she'd do whatever.
For our wedding they're planning on wearing the same color as the rest of the bridal party.

I wasn't sure if the same color was appropriate...my mom wants to get a brown dress and thats what the bp is wearing...I didnt know if I should talk her out of it

well what some people do is the MOB decides first what color dress to wear and then the MOG usually gets something different.
its up to you...FMIL bought her dress last weekend, she asked me what color is my mom wearing and i said not to worry about, i know what colors she was considering and i said most likely my mom wont buy that color and my mom doesn't care about these things.
as far as copying how formal it is i dont think you have to do this...people have different styles so if one wants something alot more formal I don't think one person should determine that for the other

It's really up to you....I haven't been to any weddings where they've worn different colors.
I wanted everyone to be comfortable with what they're wearing so i'm keeping out of the decision other than the designer and color for the BM's.
I kinda wanted the BM's to wear one color, the mothers another and the MOH a combination of both. That was quashed when I spoke to my mom, she decided she was more comfortable wearing the same color.

My mom and FH mom don't get along AT ALL...so I guess I should let them pick their own thing and stay as far away from it as possible
