I'm really not a chandelier kind of girl. Every place I look at is not my taste. I really like lofts but I promised my mom I wouldn't pick any place in Manhattan. Does anyone know of any modern places on Long Island or Queens?

Re: modern reception venues
My uncle got married here and my friend is getting married there in May of 2010. It's in Long Island City.

It's beautiful but definitely different.

::Sigh:: I love the foundry, but couldn't fit my group. =(
I also love Stage 6 at Steiner Studios with Abigail Kirsch as a caterer. Gorgeous space with an outdoor lounge with views of the Brooklyn Bridge. ANd no chandeliers. Try the Metropolitan building also in LIC.

I am the same way (in terms of personal taste), I booked Land's End and I think it has a more modern feel.

I was also going to suggest Land's End - I wouldn't say modern, but more of a plain room that you can do a lot with (e.g. lighting, decorations), not to mention the outside is perfect. Also may want to try the Metropolitan, I'm not sure if modern, but 'different' and possibly the Royalton. Chateu Briand has a more modern/club feel CH.
