Re: Moms can drive you crazy!

Just so you know you aren't the only one that has been engaged for 2 years---I have been and is long but it is your decision. I think you have to just come out & tell her when you set a date. I think there is nothing wrong w/ waiting if that is what you want to do. As to your mother's negatives I think mom's just don't realize and what is the rush--if you have been together w/ your FH for 10 years & you have a child what is another 2 years.

From someone that has been engaged for two years though it seems like it will never come...I am finally down to 7 months though & I just want it to be here already.

Good luck

I'm sorry she's being so unsupportive. I think if you said exactly what you just said to us about you wanting to save up the money, etc. etc. that'll show a great deal of respect on your part. I definitely think some parents are old fashioned, not realizing how much weddings cost and that when they got married, the ballgame was a little different.

Completely agree--some of the things that come out of my mom's mouth I am like mom just b/c you did that in 1978 doesn't mean that is the way it is now. honestly they just don't get it--although they try & be helpful!

Thanks everyone for your support. I going to try to talk to her. But knowing my mom she won't let me get a word in.

I'm sorry I went through the same thing with my mom...she just doesn't think before she says things...when we got engaged and we told her we were going to have a two year engagement she was upset. She said what if your sister gets engaged shortly and she wants to get married in 2006 also. I said we'll cross that bridge when we come to it...I'm not going to bump up my wedding b/c my sister MIGHT be getting engaged. Also when I told my mom the song I wanted to dance with my father with was sentimental she had something to say about it. My parents are divorced and my dad honestly is a jerk, but he's still my father. My mom says she always makes comments b/c she wants what is best for us, but she just doesn't think. Good luck to you and hang in there and remember it's your wedding...if you want to have a 10 year engagement then go ahead and do it.

I am dealing with an overbearing mother as well. Try to compromise on certain things with her - especially things that don't mean as much to you so when the time comes, you can be seen as flexible. I am going to have to do that on a couple of things as much as it kills me. On other things I REFUSE to bend. Trying to keep the peace is more of a project than anything else. The anxiety I have dealing with my mother is unreal. It is a matter of survival. I still think we need a support group!!!

I couldn't agree more...when my parents got married it cost them $25.00 a plate. In addition my parents didn't have a videographer, my mother did her own hair and make up, they didn't rent any limos, my mother's dress cost $75.00. Not to mention that it was alot easier to book and hall with less than 6months to the wedding 30 yrs ago. The hall you want at the time of yr you want it may be book...so you end up waiting on more year....remind your mother that its not 1974 and things have changed...weddings have changed...tell her to talk to her friends who have children who have recently been married, so that she can get some perspective.
