Seriously how do you afford to pay for the wedding on your own???
FH& I are trying to see how we're seriously gonna make this work!
We only need about $10k but even that is hard to come up with right now!
Its just a little depressing

We're also paying on our own - what we did when we decided when we wanted to get married is set a realistic budget. Once we did that, I created a spreadsheet that calculated how much we can both save per month (knowing our monthly expenses), and then I added it up to the month before the wedding. This way you can see how much you can really save and then you just push eachother to make sure you both put that money into a joint/savings account every month.
Definitely is stressful - but take it a day at a time and just make sure to stick to your budget.

Re: money woes
I agree - orginally when I got engaged in 2009 .. but budget was .......WHEW, lets just say I was watching too much Platitum Weddings and glancing at too many Bridal magazines...
Once we got a REAL budget, FH and I were on the same pages and divide the number by number of months remaining and start tucking money away.. Is $10k realistic for you guys? Maybe $6k might be more reasonably but I dont know the pricing on FL packages.

Re: money woes
how many people btw? where are you having it? my coworker had a wedding in FL last summer. Also, can you keep it very intimate to cut costs? my girlfriend spent $5k on her destination wedding in DR but then again she only had 15people or less i think.. it definitely didnt exceed pass 25people..

We only plan on inviting about 40 people hopefully only 25-30 will actually come with us. We're looking to keep the wedding at about $5k but that doesn't include photographer or rings or the honeymoon!

Do you have a place yet? There are lots of restaurants that you could go to that have dance floors - for instance I don't know where you live but Prime in Huntington (old Coco's) has space for that amount.....

we had booked a hall in LI that we canceled...then we were gonna just go away but that's gonna cost us just as much...
we're at the point where we just want to get this whole thing over with. And we don't want to go broke in the process.

I know my friend from work just got married. He had booked at prime and it looked amazing - don't know how much - there's also a new restaurant by the Smithaven mall - there was a small party there - about 40 people and the food is amazing!

Our problem is if he have a wedding here our guest list us atleast 125-150pp. Just thinking about going to city hall and having a backyward type reception. Very casual

Sounds good to me! There are a lot of companies that do professional BBQ's for large groups - I think my mom had one for my siblings graduation - it was like 500 including servers......

Re: money woes
FH and I may take out a personal loan close to the wedding and pay it off after. we can get a pretty awesome interest rate, and as long as you don't take out more than you can afford monthly, its no different than using a credit card. I know there are mixed feeling about taking a personal loan out for a wedding, but if it keeps you sane, and you don't go out of control with what you take out, it's not terrible.

really??? FH & I were talking about it earlier...i started e-mailing a bunch of rental places but probably won't hear back from them with price quotes until Monday.
If we could keep rentals at $500; and another $1,500 on food & liquor...that's the right price! LOL plus we figured doing it in the backyard; we could invite ALL the people we want and don't have to worry about cutting the list or anything.
And it will be very casual-no flatware or china rentals.

Re: money woes
The key really is to stick to a budget and put aside a certain amount for the wedding. FH & I made a big mistake and did not stick to our budget, now we are real late on our payment, and have to use some of the money my parents were giving us for the last payment before the big day. Its hard because everyone has bills to pay, we have a mortgage, etc.... so its real hard to set aside a certain amount. Plus the stress of it has been making us argue over money and it is not worth it because this is the time to be enjoying the wedding planning, not arguing about who is coming up short for the payment. I don't know how everyone else is doing it, but any other advice is welcome. Good luck to all.

That is US exactly!!! We're already dishing out $2,500+ each month on the mortgage; cars and other household bills; we hardly have the extra $$ each month to put aside and when we do have it; it kind of sucks to have to just save it and put it aside when it can go towards to many other things!
Our families really don't have the $$ to help us so we're doing everything solo.
We're to the point where we want to just get it over with and continue on with our lives together!

Re: money woes
Try to lower your monthly expenses. When I lost my job, we created a budget and reduce our monthly expenses over 2K. TV service, Cell Phones, House and Car insurance. Couple of minutes can save you couple of dollars a month. For x-mas, we no longer exchange gifts except for our Nieces and Nephews.
You can always put your tax refund to the wedding.... Hope you get a good one.
If anyone who needs help creating a budget, I did a lot of research in software that helps you get on track. I feel in love with YNAB.

Re: money woes
I have to do what you can afford. Since you already have a house it might be great to have your wedding there with the people who mean the most to you. We scaled back a lot and decided an all inclusive place was best for us. It is hard when you are paying yourself. This may seem awful but maybe the 40 people you were going to invite to the destination wedding are all the people you really need to invite to your NY wedding if you choose to have it here again.
