DH and I are thinking about running away this weekend and going somewhere fun. Is there anything to do in Mystic or Montauk this time of year? I would think it is more affordable since it is off season, but what is there to do in the cold?

Re: Montauk or Mystic in the Winter?
It's REAL quiet out in Montauk this time of year. The only thing to see at this time of teh year is the lighthouse and maybe Gossman's dock. If you're looking for a very quiet time, then Montauk is it. There's not much to do there this time of year. At least in Mystic you've got the aquarium.

Re: Montauk or Mystic in the Winter?
I went to Mystic for a night in December. It was nice - very cold and not a lot to do but a great getaway. We went to the aquarium and all the little shops in the day time. Then for a nice seafood lunch. There is the boat museum/tour but we didn't do that. Late afternoon we just hung around the room and relaxed and at night we went for a very nice dinner and then drove to the casinos for a little bit (it is only about a 20 min drive). I hate casinos so we only stayed for a bit. After an hour I get so bored....but it was fine for the hour!! It was a great getaway!!!

Montauk is nice when it isn't freezing--I love looking on the beach for shells and seals--BUT in the frigid cold like now there is nothing to do. Many of the restaurants close in winter.
Mystic is nice because there is more indoor entertainment, and it is near the casinos...

We just got back from Mystic. It was cold but, we had a great time. We went to the Aquarium, to the Old Mystic Seaport, Old Mystic Village, into Downtown Mystic. It was pretty fun. Granted, some shops are closed for the season, and there isn't a whole lot to do, but we had a great time anyway. I would recommend it. There are also the casinos. We didn't go, but that is always another option.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Looks like there will be more to do in Mystic. Are there any other places that would be fun this time of year that won't break the bank?

I also recommend Mystic, we were in Norwich (20 min. away from Mystic) the last week in December...we had a blast! There is a Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa at the Marriot in Mystic! Pamper yourself for a full day, then you can always go to Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods (10 min. away).

Re: Montauk or Mystic in the Winter?
A few years ago DW and I went to Newport, RI. A little further than Mystic, but if you take a ferry it isn't so bad. We did a bed and breakfast and toured some of the mansions. We went after Christmas, and the rates were better than in the spring/summer/fall seasons. Most of the mansins are open, although they do close a few. I imagine it would be the same as Mystic...shops and restaurants, etc., but the mansions and B&B were real nice.

Where did everyone stay in Mystic? Are there nice, affordable hotels there?
