What is the difference between a carafe and a decanter? Do I need both? Do I need either?

i dont really know! i was under the impression that a carafe was taller with a smaller opening and is often used for white wine because it has minimal exposure to air. A decanter is lower and often wider, which increases exposure to air and is used for reds?

I can be totally off though!

Don't think you need either. We registered for a decanter (i think) because we thought it was pretty. nothing expensive though.

I feel like the wine goes so fast - if we are entertaining and have it there are usual enough people where the bottle is emptied just by filling everyone's glass!!

I registered for a crystal decanter for our formal china, thinking maybe if I was doing formal entertaining I'd be more likely to use it? Who knows!

ok i looked on C&B and apparently decanters have tops and carafes are open.

we registered for this one:

however, we havent used it because it's been in NY and we can't figure out how to get it back with us on the plane. we might need to return it and rebuy it
