Mortgage Payments

Mortgage Payments

For those of us home-owners (or renters in pricey areas) ...

Is it just me or is Long Island real estate and taxes pushing middle class, young couples to the extreme? DH have been in our Suffolk home for about 18 months. Our mortgage payment is about $3000 and it's more than 50% our total salary (after taxes).

We love our home but I am becoming increasingly frustrated with high mortgage payments, utilities, taxes, etc. My friends and I don't talk about $$$ too much so I guess I feel a little isolated about our financial crunch. Is anyone out there feeling the pressure, too??

I'm not considering moving but I've heard of young newlyweds moving upstate, FL, PA, etc to get a 'reasonably' priced home. Anyone looking into this?

As always, very curious to hear everyone's thoughts ...

yes you are correct - and housing prices have started to decrease in areas I am looking.

FH and I are saving lots of $$ and when we get our mortgage, it will be about 1/4th of our salaries (take home). but there are pleanty of people in the same boat as you

i would search on LIFamilies - there are many people on there that are from LI and relocated to places like NC and GA. they will probably be able to give you better advice.

we have thought about moving, but FH is a teacher so his paycut would be so its really not an option for us!

I feel ya. We put over 100,000 down on our house... and our mortgage is still over 2500!!!

If we hadn't had that much money for a downpayment - I can't even imagine what we might be paying now!

As frustrating as it is, I know our salaries won't be what they are here if we move. Also, we really REALLY love Long Island! *sigh*
