I need help ladies. I was about to take FH name (we got our license yesterday) and I freaked out. I felt so physically ill that I got back online and changed it to hyphenated instead. It felt like such a relief, but now I don;t know what to do about paperwork. When do you sign both names, which do you use daily , do you have people refer to you by both? Did you change all of your documents? Please help!

Re: Mrs. So and So-Please Help
I hyphenated my name with the first marriage but I predominatly used my married name. You need to make sure legally everything matches. If you hyphenate it with DMV, you need to do so on the registration and insurance-etc... FH wants me to take his name but I am worried about losing my maiden name. It becomes an issue if you divorce, you need to ask the judge to resume your maiden name where if you hyphenate, you can just take it back. FH says I am not going anywhere, so why not change it. To him, it seems as though I am not committed.

I hyphenated my last name on our marriage license. I haven't changed my name anywhere, I still go by my maiden name (at work, on credit cards, bank accounts, etc). Socially, people refer to us as Mr & Mrs His Last Name. I won't officially change my name to the hyphenated version until we have children.

Thank you it feels good I'm not alone. Does it matter if you use one or the other? I am a teacher and about to sign paperwork at another school so I figure I mgiht as well use my new name in paperwork but I want the kids to call my by my maiden name.
